Here's a good one for ya BadWebers. I was out and about from about 3.30 on yesterday. Before hitting downtown I rode back to the house to take care of the dogs. This was about 9.30 so it had been dark about an hour. I haven't noticed anything unusual to this point. The road I live on is pretty dark, everything seemed fine on the way down to the house. Turned the bike off, took care of the dogs, hoped back on the bike and headed down the street. I noticed no light! Turn signals and tail/break light is fine. Got it in the garage, all fuses seemed fine as well as connections to the lights. I run two high beam housings with hyper white bulbs. When toggling from low to high on the switch, the high beam light on the dash stayed lit. I'm about to go dig into it. Just wanted to see if anyone had some ideas.

Both lights out at once, but the indicator works, and the fuse is good. Broken ground wire?

This is strange. Bulbs, fuses and wiring is fine. Nothing even close to being chafed. I'm stumped. I don't want to bring it to the dealership because the Buell guy who was a badass moved to PA.

Book doesn't show a relay for the head lights. I think I'm screwed as well...just got off the phone with dealership service. I told them what was going on and of course they said I'd have to bring it in. But they remember me talking months ago about replacing the low beam housing with a high beam housing and running hyper whites. They say I may have fried a circuit. I would think if a circuit would have fried, it would have happened earlier than this. They said it will probably affect my warranty due to the fact that I don't have a low beam housing to send back to Buell. I have no idea where it is. On top of that they said their backed up. That can be worked around since I kinda get hooked up with family working there, I get pushed to the front if there aren't many Buells in service.

I've had the ground wire attached but loose,causing no headlights.The ground wires attached to the bulbs MUST be secure.

That's all i've got regarding this.

There is a relay that kills the headlights while the starter is cranking. If it fails
you can end up with this set of symptoms.

On the 9r, would that be one of the 3 relays that are on the left of the front fairing bracket? I'm trying to do this with little tools. Majority of my stuff, including my ohm meter is at work. I wont have them until late tonight early tomorrow morning. What's weird to me is when I toggle the low/high switch, the high beam light stay on on the dash. It doesn't toggle on/off with the switch like it should. HD service is trying to tell me the hyper white bulbs may have blown a circuit. But the hyper whites are the exact wattage as the stock bulbs.

All the relays are the same, try swapping them around.

Swapped them...nothing. I got nothing else. Gotta go to work in about an hour. Keep the ideas coming. I'll check in when I get home tomorrow morning.

Next I'd be looking at the wiring harness where it comes between the fork and the frame.

There have been many reports of wires rubbing through there.

I'd be looking at the headlight connection. Help me out here: if it was a relay issue, I'm thinking the high beam dash light would not be on. So, the electronics think the high beam is on.
From the wiring diagram, it looks like you should follow the white wire from the handlebar switch to the back of the headlights. If BE is blue that is the one that goes to the power/key switch.

Some people have referred to another connection in the headlight area that is for the European lighting. Plug it in there and see if that changes anything. If lights, then problem is at headlights. If nothing, then problem is before headlights.

Hopefully, if I'm misleading you, somebody will step in with wisdom (that would be you, Brian).

If I can ever get out of this damn court building I'll have all my tools including my ohm meter. I should be able to trouble shoot a lot better with it. My wiring diagram in the manual is useless to me. It's a print out of a scanned page. It's not very ledgeble.

Mine did the same thing - with one exception - if I carefully balanced the switch between high beam and low beam, I could get the high beam light to come on and stay on. Saving you the story of my troubleshooting and going straight to the punchline, it was the switch itself - I took the handlebar unit apart, and drowned the switches in WD-40. Now the high beam worked like it's supposed to, but no low beam. I notice while playing with the switch that the screw holding it into the handlebar housing was ever so slightly loose...and that screw actually holds the switch together, too...tightened it about 3/4 turn with a phillip screwdriver, and now have normal high and low beam operation. HOPE this works for you!

This is getting stranger by the minute. When the lights first went dead the high beam light on the dash stayed lit when being toggled from low beam to high beam. Now that I have all my tools at home, I turned the bike on to check my voltage from A to B. I noticed now the dash light toggles along with the switch. I opened the switch housing per Jungles problems and I got 12v from the switch all the way through to the head light connections. I'm completely stumped now.

Check that you have continuity from the lighting ground wire back to the negative battery terminal. Also check the terminal itself to make sure it looks like it will still fit tightly over the blades of the male connection.

Well....found out today that it was a ground. Where the female connection of the head light harness connects to the main harness there is a bad ground. I figured it would be but I couldn't get the male and female sides of each harness apart. So I ended up bringing it to the dealership. My mom called and said get your ass down here asap. They walked me back into the shop today and the guy said "Why the hell did you glue the connectors together?" I'm like WHAT. I would never do something like that. Well the dip shit who owned it before me did. Because of this it's gonna be covered under warranty. I'm pissed. Now I have to pay for some one else rigging shit up.

You did...and I knew you were right. I couldn't get the connector apart and thought it would be covered under the warranty. It wasn't and that sucks, but their good guys in Brandon and they'll do the job right. I've got too many other projects that I need to deal with anyways.
