'05 XB9SX. I have the manual and have been following it's direction closely. However, When I loosen the rear axle, the wheel cocks to the right (Pulley side) and I get no tension release on the belt-none. The axle binds as it gets to aprox 10 turns and the pulley will not come off because the belt has so much tension on it.
What am I doing wrong?
Loosening the axle is not relieving tension on the belt, thus the wheel is not coming off!
Please help!

Work on getting that idle pulley off.
It can be difficult I know.
You can also back the axle out a bit more, it's tapered.

Sounds like your wheel spacer may be seized to the axle.

Try running it in and out a few times to try to break it free.

As Glitch stated.Did you firstly remove the idler pulley? That MUST come off BEFORE loosening the axle.

My '05 has never given me ANY issue wrt tire removal.

Well, it was tough but i'm done!
I thought the belt would loosen as I loosened the axle but it didn't. I ended up removing the axle completely, then removing the pulley. Perhaps not the textbook way but it worked. I was hesitant to remove the axle out of fear of stripping it, or destroying the threads on the left side of the swingarm.
Front wheel took 4 minutes.
New tires mounted, i'm back on the road.
Thanks for the replies.

Ducxl: Out of curiosity (And for my next tire change), how the hell do you remove the pulley before loosening the axle??
The pulley is under tension and for the life of me, I couldn't get it to budge. That's why I ended up completely removing the axle.
