Tried to adjust the clutch cable on my 08 xb12xt and cant get it right. The transmission is making a click noise when I start to let the clutch out. Is the primary not tight enough? | ||

I started out by backing off the adjustment screws, to take the tension off the clutch cable. Then took the filler plate with the 3 screws off. Then moved the adjustment screw CCW until in started to get tight (about 3/4 a turn) then turned it 1/4 turn CW. Then adjusted the clutch cable so it has 1/16 of space between the clutch and the cable. How tight should I turn the adjustment screw for the clutch, the one under the filler plate, before I turn it back clock wise 1/4. | ||

should I bottom the screw out then turn it back cw, or just turn it until I fell resistance, then back it off. | ||

You would want to adjust clutch, clutch cable and primary all at the same time. Loosen the clutch cable, open the clutch inspection cover. Turn that screw all the way in (Can't remember if it's right hand thread or left hand) until it "gently" seats, then turn it back out I think 1/4 turn. Replace clutch inspection cover. Adjust primary chain. With the primary... Too tight is BAD. Too loose and it makes some noise while decelerating. I think proper free play when COLD is 5/8".I generally set mine to a bit more than the width of the chain and it seems good. No toasted bearings here  . How many miles on the bike? The primary needs to be adjusted at say 1200, 2500, 5000 and again at say 7500 miles. They wear in a bit. | ||

One thing that I've found helps is to work the clutch lever a couple times before you turn the screw. You should turn the screw only until it gently bottoms. Don't go turning it to it's "stop". I seem to remember that it's CW until it gently seats and then CCW... I could be wrong . | ||

And thats how I performed the adjustment. I think I just didnt turn the adjustment screw in far enough. | ||

explain "gently bottoms out" I get the gently bottoming out fill at or around 1 turn or less. Right when I start to fell resistance is what Im considering "gently bottoming out. Is this correct or should I keep turning. Ive adjusted the adjustment screw 7 different times now and im still getting the clicking noise when I let the clutch out. Could it be the primary chain making this noise? | ||
