Guys, ANYONE know of a source for the "obsolete" kickstand bolt for an XB? Part is not offered anymore and HD forces you to buy the whole kickstand kit....c'mon badwebbers...

I "reverse engineered" mine. Originally the pivot bolt has a threaded shaft coming out of the bolt sleeve/collar. Where it breaks off, I drilled and tapped a 1/4x20 thread into the sleeve/collar and installed a 3/4" long grade 8 bolt, with a little blue lock tight.

Bought me some time until I replaced it with the redesigned factory kickstand. Which works much smoother, I might add.

I believe the problem solved. Thanks Microchop for helping me out in a bind (not even asking for a dime.) Bueller helping Bueller...in literally 5 minutes after I posted the shout out for help. Nowhere but Badweb would this ever happen. Thanks, Microchop....

What year and model bikes did this kickstand issue affect? I bought a used '03 XB9 and was wondering if there is a way to tell if the updated kickstand is already on the bike?

Hey 3reg3,

If it is the updated setup it wont be a bolt but a pin. That pin will have a clip retaining it on the bottom side to prevent it from sliping out. This new design eliminated a threaded portion and made it a full pin.

Email your VIN to me at jgoetz@hdoffrederick.com and I can run it for open recalls on Friday when I return to work. Or, you can call your servicing dealer with the same information and they can check for recalls - whichever you prefer : )

I just replaced bolt a month ago...

I kicked my stand up to go on a ride and it just fell off..

Can you buy just the new pin and retaining clip?

And to think it almost didn't happen!
I came home from work and couldn't find the bolt.
Luckily, I was distracted in just the right way and its location came to me.

And for the "rest of the story"

You can thank my wife. 2.5 years ago when my kickstand bolt broke and we had been dating for just a couple months. She went to the nearest dealer and bought not one, but 3 of the bolts. Another badwebber has the other "spare"

My bike now has a drilled stocker and a grade 8...so I no longer need this one. Enjoy.
It'll go out in tomorrow's mail.

Tedd, you can't install the new pin/clip into the old kickstand. The diameter of the new pin is about 1/2" vs. the 1/4x20 thread on the old kickstand.

Now maybe, just maybe, you could drill out the 1/4x20 thread to 1/2" and install the new clip. I'm not sure of the OAL of the new pin, if it would be long enough to go through the old kickstand. Plus, when my original bolt broke, it allowed the "fork" on the old kickstand arm to spread and not be parallel. I had to squeeze it in a vise to line back up-probably not the best idea, but it worked until I replaced it.

New kickstand kit includes a new kickstand "arm" as well as the pivot pin and E-clip.

The old kickstand had 2 tabs that went (one on each side) of a tab that comes from the main Buell frame. The top tab had a 1/2" hole, the bottom had a 1/4 x 20 thread that the old style kickstand pivot bolt threaded in to. The hole in the frame tab was 1/2" dia.

The new kit has 1/2" holes in both of the kickstand tabs. Eliminating the need to thread the pivot bolt in to the bottom kickstand tab.

I installed the new kit just before Homecoming-after the second replacement bolt sheared off. The new kit seems to pivot much smoother. I purchased the kit from Cityxslicker at Legend HD/B - BadWeB sponsor. Kit is around $65 list price, minus any BadWeB discount.

The "hardest" part of the whole deal is getting the return spring back on the catch pins. I used a small 1/4" blade strait screwdriver and a little patience to put it back on. Hook the spring on the top frame pin, place spring about 3/4" to 1" up from the screwdriver blade, put just the very tip of the screwdriver blade just on the top edge of the pin on the kickstand arm and pull the screwdriver towards the ground to lever the spring down onto the kickstand pin.

As I said above, you may be able to drill out the 1/4x20 hole to 1/2" and just install the new design pivot pin. I don't even know if the new pivot pin is available separate from the entire kit I'll have to verify the OAL length of the old and new pivot pins to see if they could be "exchanged" after drilling out the old arm. Obviously, you'd need to have access to a drill press and a 1/2" drill bit.

hehehe, sorry the short answer is Yes, it it more bullet proof, no threads to shear off.

The new pin can pivot on all 3 tabs, where it could only pivot on 1 (the frame tab) before.

Toona,

Thanks for the detail's. I keep my bike on a PitBull stand at home because of trust issues. The paint would cost me dearly to fix..... if it even could. One more question though. Is the new kit 08 or 07 or???

Bad, sorry, but I'm not sure when the kit came out. My bike is an '04. As much as I didn't like the idea of spending $65 for a kit, I figured it was cheap insurance as I've had 2 of the old style pivot bolts break. Fortunately both times, I realized it was broken before putting the weight of the bike on the stand. The last time, I put my heel on the kickstand to put it down and the entire kickstand fell off the bike and hit the ground.

I'm just curious if the kit is basically the same as you see on a 08. I don't want to go to my dealer and say I need a replacement for my 04 and then thats what I get. I want the updated unit. So would it be safe to just ask for a 08 sidestand kit???

Bingo.... You guys read my mind...

I know I'm going to have to bite the bullet sooner or later as much as I ride my bike..

My bike could have fell or even worse it could have fell off while I was driving..

A little cutting Oil and I can have that punched out in a minute... If the sell the pin and clip separate..

I'm picking up some parts from the dealer in the morning.. I'll check and see if its a separate Item...

Jason....much thanks to you and your wife...little did she know that she her over-indulgence at the dealer would save a couple people big time down the road.
