I picked up my new 2008 XB12Ss last week. Everything is perfect except for very difficult shifting. (I searched the site and did not find threads directly on the problem I've having. If I missed something, please excuse me.) On my first two rides, the shifting was perfect. On my last three outings, I have had problems shifting into the next higher or next lower gear. Sometimes I can't get into 5th, sometimes I can't shift down into 1st and almost everything in between. I have not ground any gears, every shift that could be made has been smooth. The odometer reads about 400 miles. I live about 250 miles away from my dealer, so I'd appreciate any help anyone can provide. I'm calling the dealer tomorrow.

It shouldnt be that hard to shift. Hate to say but it could be a tranny problem if the clutch feels okay. I just couldnt see that being a problem this early on though. Use that warranty..hopefully just a clutch adjustment.

Brand new Buells (and Harleys) are almost always hard to shift. Let them break in, THEN decide.

Thanks for the comments. It is not hard to shift like being hard to move from one gear to another. When I try to shift, the lever moves fine by nothing happens. I can try to shift slowly, quickly, carefully or very forcefully and the lever moves but no shifting happens. For example, I might try over and over and over to shift from 4th to 3rd and while the lever moves, it won't go into 3rd. I'll ride for a few more miles, trying regularly to shift and then finally I might get the shift, but maybe not.

I'd double-check the external linkage to make sure everything's moving correctly. Make sure the top piece is tight to engage the splined shaft.

If that's good. I'd stop riding and get the dealer to pick it up. Call Buell if you have to.

It's too early for wear. I'm thinking something is broken and that means there is a piece of metal in your transmission. Or, some internal linkage is incorrect and that can also lead to failure.

Does this happen at the start of the ride or about 15 minutes into it?

Also try this, after about 10 -15 minutes park the bike, engine off. Put the bike in gear. Push it, does it move? With the clutch in, push it. Does it move? Those are clutch adjustment questions.

More importantly, tell your dealer, and ask them what to do.

Thanks, Angel. All good ideas. This usually begins about 5 - 10 minutes into the ride. Since it's so new, I've only been out on it about 5 times and it seems to begin earlier on each successive ride. I'll be speaking to the dealer tomorrow.
