The Buell heated grips that cost around $200 are only for the o8 lightning. Is there a way to make the heated grips work on an 05 XB Lightning?

Why not just get generic heated grips (of various types) for $35-$100?

I guess to spoil myself. It comes with a whole new control that has the start button, Heat control and kill switch on it. I like the clean look when there installed.

There's always a way.
It would most likely require much snipping & splicing.

I might have been interested in such a project Myself if I didn't already have polly heaters on my 05 12S. They cost a whopping $36.00 and were easy to install with a relay. I've had them for a couple years and they work great. They go inside the bars so you can use any grip if your choice. They take about 10 minutes to heat up but boy when they do they have two settings, Hot and Ouch!

I just recently bought the OEM heated grip switch (complete housing) from Al at American Sport Bike for $57.00 (not incl tax & shipping). It was just the switch & housing, no heated grips.

I had to strip everything out of the new housing except the switch itself so I could use my existing 05 wiring & switches (ign kill and starter button) and I had to snip off the deutsch connectors but I was able to splice it to the Pollys very easily.

So now my 05 has excellent heated grips that look factory because it's got the nifty OEM switch.

First original switch:

Last year got clever and installed this mini toggle:

And now the OEM:

I put the OEM kit on my 06 Lightning, the only reason they say it dosen't work on buell.com is because you need to splice power into it, vs 08s have a accessory jack under the screen. Get it. Its pricey, but works great.

Where do I splice into?

i got a set of 30 jobbers from a dirtbike shop... you have to cut the high capacity wire from the ignition (not starter) relay and i ran it thru one of the spare fuses in the block. there isn't much slack at all in the fuse block or anything, so mean what you do! i put my switch on the side of the headlight housing like the first pic above.

If you're going with the full Buell kit You'd need to run a power feed (preferably from a relay that's powered off the brake light or some other low power circuit if it;s placed under seat or the ign wire off the headlight assembly works well if the relay is placed behind flyscreen)to a deutsch connector like the connector 08 bikes have. Once you have such a connector hooked up, the grips should just plug in I imagine.

Now when it comes to the housing itself, I'm not sure if the ign kill and starter wiring have the same connectors as the 08 bikes.
I didn't look because it was easy enough to remove that stuff from the new housing and put my existing ones into it. So no cutting or splicing was needed for that.

The interesting thing about the switch is that it has two power feed wires. It's like the hi and lo have their own circuits. They're both orange. I connected them together then connected them to my already existing power feed (that I put in when I installed my Pollys) using a blue Posi Lock connector.

If you don't know what posi-locks and posi-taps are, google them. Not now, Right now! They are electrical godsends. The posi-taps let you get power from any wire without stripping or cutting. It won't damage the wire either like those scotch lock things or whatever they're called (I hate those things.

Connecting the grips was easy enough. Thanks to Al at American Sport Bike I knew that the blue wires coming off the switch were for the hi circuit and the brown wires were for the lo circuit.

I recommend the Pollys over the Buell grips on a pre 08 Buell (excluding the Uly) for one simple reason.

The heaters are inside the bars and the wires run through the bars (you have to drill two small holes at the bottom of the bars for the wires to exit) so it is a very clean look when installed.
There's no loop of wire hanging down from the grip on these babies : )

On the 08 I would recommend the Buell ones just because everything is already pre wired there so why not.

I did go with the buell grips. Used a tap splice on the head light harness (yellow as positive and black for ground. No wires were cut and the grips worked fantastic on my ride home last night. Time will tell...the lights dim O' so slightly at idle, but while driving I couldn't see a difference turning the grips on and off several times at various speeds.

Thank you all for your knowledge, it helped a lot!!

The Buell grips on high consume 36 watts, which is a drop in the bucket for the stators, so you shouldn't have an issue wither at speed or idle.

Alright! Congrats on the install.

Once you've had heated grips you'll swear to yourself that you'll never own a bike that doesn't have them : D

Heated grips should be standard on EVERYTHING. Even today, nice and warm but a little chilly as i left for work at 7AM, just flip the switch and all is good. Or how about those days your riding in the rain, just flip the switch and you can keep on riding longer without your hands getting cold from the rain.

What is the part # for the switch assembly including the heater switch? My dealer is a little confused as to which one I want.

Also has anyone else found that when connecting to different sources you will get very different temps at the polly heaters, ie direct to battery, headlight, position lights etc.

Don't know the number.

The only person I know of who has them in stock is Al at American Sport Bike. They can be found on his site.
Unfortunately he's closed until July 7th.

I've only had my Pollys hooked up direct to battery via a relay (the only way to go in my book) but the temps have been the same with all three different switches if that helps.

I noticed something with the Buell switch. It could very well be my imagination (placebo effect) or it could be because of the double wire set up (each hi & lo grip wire gets it's own wire to the switch but it seems like they warm up a minute or two faster.

It's probably my imagination.
