Not sure if this is normal or not, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Lately, as I've been breaking my 12S in, just crossed 2k miles, I've noticed a rattling sound at around 4k on the tach. It doesn't do it a lot, but it could be happening more often as the weather get hotter.

It's only a quick rattle when I come up to 4k, then it goes away, kinda sound like the header or something is rattling from the vibration.

Is this normal or not? Either way, what is it?

I had a problem REALLY similar to that. It was really weird cause it would come then go at a certain RMP... Any whoodle it was my instrument cluster and one of the mounting bolts was stripped from factory and finally backed itself out. replaced 1 week before warranty was up. Holy mackeral, when I was on the bike I couldn't figure out what it was. My license plate does the same thing though. lot's o vibrations. Harley roots. IT'S NOT A HARLEY, but Harley roots

I had a problem with my horn/horn bracket rattling on a bunch of stuff in there...and it only took 3 trips to the dealer for them to get it to stop. that was an annoying couple of weeks...

Mine had the same vibration at 4,000 RPM both with sound and noise. The sound went away when I moved the horn away from the back of the front wind screen. The vibration went away as the engine and transmission loosened up.

I notice the vibration a little still when it's cold out and the isolators loose a little of their give.

So this subtle rattle is not a normal buell noise? It only happens in gear, usually in 2nd and 3rd, when its hot out. Not a pinging but does sound like it's coming from the exhaust/ headers/engine, it makes about 5 little rattle noises for a quick second then stops.
Will the dealer check it out at no cost to me, under warranty?

I don't see why they wouldn't. A little bit of preventive medicine wouldn't hurt. If they won't, I would be learning my bike from tire to tire. Screw the dealer.

you know come to think of it I posted somethin similar to your problem. Everyone seemed to say it was pinging. It always happened in higher gears and after coasting I loaded the engine to get on the free way.. Here'a the link...http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/352702.html

I think Im in the same boat. I read here that Buells make lots of strange noises so its normal, but now Im reading about the pinging and wondering if I have that? I have one noise that sounds like rear number plate is vibrating (but its not). Its most noticeable when Im in too low revs and I give it boot full, it seems to make the rattle noise as it pulls through until I get to the higher revs. The other noise is a sort of rhythmic flittering noise (like flicking a deck of cards) coming from I assume the intake. I think this might be the 'pennies in a blend noise' that people mention. Are these normal- Anymore descriptions on what 'pinging' sounds like as Im a bit unfamiliar with this?

My exhaust valve rattles at 2,500-3,500 rpm. Verified by the dealer.

Go to the dealer and get it checked out. My bike started with a similar problem that later turned into a huge problem. The bearing between the rod and crank went out. $3k to fix it. But it is covered under warranty material failure. I thought it was just a little noise or fueling problem and rode it for a while and it went from kinda noisy to a death rattle. read this post http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/368392.html?1213711793

One of the guys posted somewhere that tightening the slack out of the muffler valve cable (under the airbox cover; make it just snug, with no slack) takes care of a rattle that sounds like the old "muffler bearing" story.

If it happens when you roll on big throttle at low revs, it could be ignition pinging or detonation.

My Uly had a helluva rattle around 3800 that turned out to be the horn bouncing off the inside of the flyscreen. Repositioned that, and no more issues for me.

Its not at low revs, it only happened when it hit a certain rpm (4k-4.5k) in gear. It hasn't done it in the last couple days.

I am thinking it has to be something thats getting pliable when it gets really hot, like the right side piece of the chin spoiler hitting against the exhaust mount. Or it is something with the tranny. The bike only has 2000 miles on it, so I hope its something loose. We'll see if it comes back.

It sounded like this:
ding dada ding ding ding dada ding

Maybe it is the muffler valve cable, tensioning up as it opens the valve, and hitting something as it tensions up.

At which RPM does the valve open?
I really can't tell when the valve opens.

Paul in Japan, do not give the bike full throttle at too low of rpm, aka when its lugging, downshift first or at least feather the clutch. Lugging at low engine speeds with a high load is not good for your engine and the sound you are hearing probably is pinging or detonation.

What you are hearing is pinging.

I had a very similar sound and for the longest time I thought it was rattling of something loose. If you really listen to it, and put the clues together, you will come to the same conclusion that I have: Pinging.

The rattling occurs:
1) Usually in the higher gears under a large throttle opening.
2) When it is hot outside.
3) Usually around 4k-5k RPM.

If it was really something rattling, it would do it when the engine vibrates the most: near idle or spinning down to idle. But it isn't. Also, it would do it no matter what the temps are outside, but it doesn't. Finally, it should do it in any gear, but it doesn't.

It's pinging.

Yea what rogue said, but Id like to stress the fact that pinging is destructive, its not a "normal xb engine sound" Dont let it ping, if its doing that let off the throttle or down shift. If you hear it very often try running better gas or an octane booster that is safe for o2 sensors. Bad spark plugs and carbon deposits can also cause excessive pinging.
