Well I rebuilt my forks this weekend and pretty much all went well except I managed to destroy one of the top caps ( # 21 in the pic). I had pulled the fork out w/o trying to loosen this first. I had done on the first fork, which went fine. So I took out the rebound adjuster spacer thing then realized that the top nut was not loosened. This is where things went bad. I put the fork back in to loosen the nut but I did not put the preload spacer piece back in. While trying to loosen the nut I tweaked the nut and hollow section where the preload sets (IE: preload no longer fits). Lesson learned.. I am now going to look for a spare triple tree top section so I can make it part of my fork rebuild kit to allow more space to work. I was thinking cutting it in half and making a bracket that bolted to it so it would set in the vise. I also need to get a 1 1/4 socket (I think thats what it was). I used the ratchet strap idea for a spring compressor. I actually modified my hook end to work better, I will post pics later cause it turned out great. No reason whats-o-ever to by the expensive tool. If someone would be willing to donate a 41 and 43 mm top triple tree mounts I am thinking of making a badweb fork rebuilt kit (odd tools only). Only thing people would have to pay for is shipping the stuff. So does anyone have a spare top cap laying around? 43mm fork - 06 XB9.. This would be a huge help to me!  | ||

Welcome to the club. I did the exact same thing to both forks when I did mine the first time. Lesson learned! I had to order the caps from a local dealer, took a couple of days. Good luck. | ||

Kind of a highjack. But you two could help me. How does one "align" the front end after a minor incident ( read crash ). Nothing is broke or leaking, just looks like forks moved in the triple tree. If either of you could help, could you email me at snkkpr01@aol.com. Thank you Darin | ||

If you look at the top tube (# 3 in the pic listed)there is two lines etched into the very top of the tube. Line those up to the top of the triple tree. |
