Hey guys and gals.
My 03 XB9S has the race muffler and ECM.
I'm getting a bit bored with the race muffler and would like to upgrade to a Special-ops or Drummer.

Anyone have experience with this?
is there really a big difference?
I'm looking for a little more mid-range and a tad more sound. (but not like D&D sound, thats too much!)

Plus I think I could sell the race muffler for around the same price I could get special-ops/Drummer for.

I'm all for the little guy, so special-ops and Drummer are the only brands i'd go with.
Plus I have talked with Odie and he seems to be a great guy, and I have heard Kevin is as well!

Thanks
-Robert

I assume you've read the exhaust shoot out at american sport bike right? that should tell you which one gives you the most power in the rpm range you're looking for.

I had an '03 S with the race pipe. Before you decide to switch, let me ask you this; Do you like the howling sound it makes at 120 mph or more? If so you should know that the sound will be different with any other pipe. Power diff will be minimal.
I miss that unique sound.

I would say that before you sell your race can that you try a different pipe first. It would suck for you if you got rid of the race can and didn't like the new pipe.

I did spend about an hour looking over the American Sport Bike exhaust shoot out. very nice job Al!!!!

120 mph!!! haha, she has seen about 105, thats it!
get over 90 and front end starts slapping and with no wind protection.....screw that!

Good idea on trying another out before I sell the race can! b/c you never know!

I'm not really concerned with power too much. but want a little louder, deeper tone throughout the RPM range.....

thanks for the input guys!

sell the muffler on ebay, make alot of money and then buy a Drummer OR keep the muffler... you will be happy you did. The drummer is great but the race can (in my opinion) is the best. I sold my race can and got a Drummer I would love my race can back.

dang , i had a race can and then got a Drummer = love it ! deeper sound ,the one sided exhaust sounds less like an xr750 than the race pipe. also i felt like i gained "lower midrange" power. starts pulling good at 3000- 3300 rpm. the drummer kinda smoothed the power out. now you might miss the "hit" (at 4000rpm) that the race pipe provides . love my drummer !

Just thinking about it -- wasn't the Jardine the best pipe for a 9 engined bike (best as in better numbers by a smidge) in the shootout? Just a thought...I own a SpecOps (put it on a few weeks ago) and I friggen love it! People stopped and looked before, not they are downright enthralled. I don't know about getting rid of the race can though -- they are pretty nice -- Luxor showed me his and I like that sound too...ahh, just get what you want -- like Lux told me, just do it. He was right -- never going back to stock, that SpecOps makes my bike seem "right" somehow -- I figure a Drummer probably does something similar though too.

On a side note, you might look into Rebel Racing pipes -- heard good things about them and they sound wicked too. Youtube them all to see/hear and go with what floats your boat.

To me, the meanest sounding pipe is the one Xopti built for his 9. He has a video on youtube...I have to have tissue near by every time I play that video.

Oh, he also said he could build you an improved version (over the design in the video) for about $300. He mentioned that over on the Buellentin Board.

What are you looking to get from the change? The Special Ops is way louder than the race pipe, too loud for my taste. I don't think you will get a noticeable difference in power, so unless you are just trying to make it louder, I don't think it is really worth your effort. I can't speak for the Drummer, as I have not tried one.

Well, I am going for a hair louder :-)

But i'd also like a different tone as well.

I like the race can, but would like a little more tone. plus, i'd like the powerband to open up a bit.

I looked up Xopti's and it sounds pretty mean! but its in a garage, so I know there is echo. wonder what it really sounds like!!

we will see......
Thanks guys!

Umm, point of order! There was a shootout between pipes, and for a XB12 the SpecialOps and Drummer came out ahead of the others. The race pipe wasn't so impressive if I remember either.

Like Luxor told me I'll tell you -- just get one.

I did, very happy, love my SpecOps. As a bonus, the noise makes drivers notice me and NOT pull into my lane/tailgate/cross in front. Double bonus for the win!

yea, I think i'm going to see what I can work out.
I really want to go with Odie!
but I gotta have dual outlets, which he said arent a big deal. unless I can find a crazy deal on a used one.

Once I finally get one, i'll slap it on and make sure i'm in love and sell the race muffler :-)

At idle is spec-ops a LOT louder or just a bit? i'm kinda worried about the wee morning hours when i'm headed to work.
Our garage is behind the house and the driveway runs along the side to the front
(right next to the neighbors house)

hmmm.....

THANKS GUYS!

My wife has a spec ops on her 9. A lot louder than stock but not too loud for early morning start ups. Don't know how much louder than race 'cause I have yet to hear one. On a side note, I had a spec ops on my 12 and absolutely loved it. Until she got one and the 9 is a little louder and has a better sound than the 12. So, I got a D&D. She's not louder any more.

I have an 08 12S. I was considering a Spec Ops or a Drummer. The deciding factor for me is the interactive exhaust. My ride has fried three servo's and a muffler. All replaced under warranty. If it fries another servo, I will replace with a drummer. I like the idea of interactive exhaust, but three servo's in 3600 miles? The decision is easy. Drummer.

My SpecOps is louder than stock at startup -- but I just keep the throttle mellow till I am out of the neighborhood. No complaints yet -- and the bike finally sounds the way it looks.

I do suggest earplugs though, some times in some gearing the pipe is a bit much but that might be more about my Arai and resonance -- Arais are not known for being quiet.

Still keeping the pipe -- friggen love it!

I just got my Special Ops pipe for my 08 XB12S. It took 4+ weeks to get it, but it's definitely worth the wait! I didn't want to mess with the ECM or air filter, which is why I went with Odie's pipe. It now sounds like it is supposed to!!! The look on people?s faces, when I start her up, is priceless!!!! : )

Man I love my race pipe. Couldnt imagine changing it, I like the sound over stock, and to me the drummers are too loud! But to each there own. It's all good. I like how the race can smoothed out the rev range and gave me power in midrange and more evenly spread out. I ussally like to hover between 4k and 6.5k and the power is bad ass, right there when I need it. Abe told me I was missing out using the Race can over stock, I just laughed and walked away. Sure you may have more 1st gear torque, but no were else. 3rd gear has far more power than over stock, (not sure the drummer helps this) and the sound to me is crap. There I said it. I dont have any stutter between the 3k to 4k like I did with stock stuff.

Hell, i'm not positive i will like the special ops better then my race can. i havent heard a special ops in person (that I remember) But hell, why not...right!

I want a little more rumble......and we will see.

Plus Odie and I worked out a trade for one of my LED lights.

I drive 34 miles every day through nothing but city streets and i want to be heard. the race can does a nice job, but I want that soccer mom on the phone who is trying to cut me off in her suburban to notice a bit better!!!

But at the same time don't want to wake the neighbors! when i leave in the earl hours.....

There is nothing wrong with trying! Just dont get rid of your old can before you test it, IMHO.
P.S. No matter what can you use, they all seem close. So it comes down to personal taste in sound. Correct me if I am wrong but the shootout from what I can remember didnt show a big difference in all the cans. I remember the race can came out on top, and was happy I have it, but thats about it. I dont think there was a huge margin in HP's between any of them. Find me a can that offers me 30 more hP's and then we will disscuss which is the best. But really all of them seem decent.

Oh, I agree. they all hit the nail on the head with performance. sound.....well thats another story!

My race can sounds pretty good, but I'm curious to see what ole odie can pull out of his hat!

Hell, who knows what I'll like best. :-)
But as-is I think i'll like Odie's just fine!!!!

Yea, i'm keeping the race can until im 110% positive I'll keep odie's on there.

Can't wait!!!
