Yup, I want to "color" my existing silver wheels and go black. No, I don't want to pony up &700.00 for a new set. What are my options for a healthy coating?...Powder coat? Ceramic? BBQ Paint?

How well does the powder coating hold up?
Any powder coaters in SE Wis? Costs?

i stripped and powder coated a set of the amber wheels for my 12. i had about $100 in them and that included paying someone to blast the coating off.

now you may have to figure in removing your tires/bearings and such, but it is still alot cheaper than a new set. mine didnt have tires on them when i started, and i just brought it to work and popped the bearings out quick. you are not supposed to reuse the bearings either(not cheap) but i did as they only had about 4500 miles on the bike.

mine held up fine all last year and the guy that bought it hasnt had a problem yet.

the one high point with blasting the rims is the powder coat has a really good surface to bite into then.

the reason the factory coated ones chip so easy around the edges is because your silver rims are EXACTLY what is under the coated ones. polished lip and all. so the coating tries to bite into the polished lip and it just doesnt work. its a simple fix and im not sure why buell doesnt change that

now my rims are not show quality, but they are good quality. $40 bucks for the pair is damn cheap for as nice as they turned out

I bought a set of black rims and sold my gold ones on EGay. I got ~250 for each gold wheel and paid ~300 for each black one.

Rice,
When you blasted your amber wheels, did they look similar to the xb non painted silver wheels that were on the 2003xb9? I always liked those.

How much is involved in just getting the amber ones powder coated black? I've been thinking about this for a while.

1. New bearings. (also need them taken out and put in.)

2. brake rotor hardware.

3. rear pully hardware

4. Tires removed if need be.

5. Front brake hardware.

6. powder coating

Now you could reuse some of the above if you really wanted but........... up to you.

I think I'm gonna just save up for new ones and be done with it. Do new wheels come with bearings?

I really want black wheels as well.
Doing the labor is no big deal, just the down time for powder coating is what I don't like. trying to see if a local guy wants to trade as well (fingers crossed)

you can get wheel bearings for pretty cheap. so I wouldnt worry too much about that.

He might not like mine the front is chipping pretty badly. Part of the reason I have decided to go ahead and powder coat them.

Whats up. Interesting post.

For all you wanting to powder coat your rims, that painting method involves heating. Your rims have been heated and cooled in the manufacturing process. Further and uncontrolled heating can weaken your wheels and make them unsafe. This type of failure occurred in a scuba bottle after it was painted and then baked. The bottle exploded and killed the person jamming it. Further more, material blasting rims, in preparing for the painting, could affect the seal the tire makes to the rim. I know this because I've blasted some surfaces that I wish I hadn't.

If color is so important to you, and you are on a budget, head down to wally world and pick up that color in a spray can. What are you doing with the powder coating shit? Who cares if it scuffs. You painted it, you can repair it. So I'm not saying don't paint it. Just think about the process. You only have two wheels and you need them to work. Not sometimes. All the time. Failure is not an option.

Ask your self: "If this was the 1970's, how would I do this . . ."

Have a good one, L

I had a set of white rims powder coated a black hammered finish. It was a local shop and the charged 150 to clean, material blast and coat. The turn around time was three days. Look around your area you should be able to find someone that can do it relatively quickly.

I've powder coated wheels for several BadWeb members and am a site sponsor. I offer a 10% discount to BadWeb members and can do metallics, candies, polished lips, pin stripes, etc. I keep new bearings and Pirelli tires in stock if needed. Best of all, I can do core exchange on XB wheels.

Good thread I was thinking about doing the same thing. I want the polished lip to the spoke and the spokes black. I was think of it as more of a winter project. I just had the bike down for a week and a half waiting on the drummer, don't want to put it down right away again. But if anyone out there is interested I have a set of red rims on my 08 in perfect condition. I may go that way.

By the way blasting will not hurt your rims, and powder coating won't either. Your aluminum heads see pretty hot temps and haven't warped yet. And as far as blasting what grade of sand are you using, your not using shot are you? Shot can put small little dents in things.
