I've had a 12R for about 8 months now and have had 3 backfires. One was while it was cold outside and I tried to start it. The other 2 were when I gave it gas after coasting for a bit. I know that's not alot but is there something I could check out.

Did this happen 3 times in the 8 months you owned it? If so I wouldn't worry at all about it.
Mine pops every so often.

Fixed would to wouldn't like it should have been...oops

Umm, you sure he isn't talking about the infamous XB hiccup? I know mine does it now and again if I load the throttle a bit -- get a nice big "POP".

LOL...I love that cold starting pop (backfire)...it has the same effect on me as a gallon of coffee in the morning before work...especially when its in the garage still. Nature of the beast my friend...nature of the beast.

I get the hiccup from time to time as well. I also get some popping while deceling as well.

Even better once the airbox has been opened up. Really scares the shit outta me. Haven't figured why or how to make it happen but does it every now and then.

They all seem to do this, don't worry about it. These engines just make a lot of funny sounds, like they said... nature of the beast.

If you had a few solid back fires, and any hesitation or stumbling afterwards, check your intake seals. OEM seals are pretty lame/weak and sensitive to backfires.

Pretty much any time I'm on decel (from a decent level of throttle) I get near-continuous popping.

The popping on decel can be corrected with the afr table.

Adjust the tps=0 row and a couple of the tps = 15 row. Change them from 14.7 to 14.8 to see if it helps.

Here's an example of someone upping them to 15.

I was talking about on loud POP and pretty much back to normal... I'm sure some popping on Decel is pretty much common, not normal but common. I'm in 105 degree weather during the day and easy 80 at night, so it's probably hard to tune for such a difference in temps.

deceleration popping is usually caused by a widening or widened gap in the plugs my bike set at .036 will ping alot when hot at .038 does not ping nearly as much but pops and gurgles on decel I'll take the trade off pining is inherently BAD

Exactly what I was referring to. The loud bang and you feel air come out around the airbox cover. Dunno what it is but happens usually when it is cold. I've checked the intake seals with propane and got nothing so they're sweet.

Poping and cracking on deccel is half the fun.

learn something new everyday.

I googled decel popping. It's perfectly fine and is better for the environment.

It's just unburnt fuel making it's way into the exhaust then burning.

Mine pops, farts, burps, stumbles every day till I've put 2-3 miles on it, then runs good, damm good. I can live with it!
