How hot does your primary get. I just did the primary reduction and went from 80w90 to 20w50 and the primary cover is so hot I can't even touch it. It also seems like theres new noises, and I' worried about the compensator nut. I put red lock tight on it but my torque wrench only goes to 180 lbs. So I just snugged it up more with a breaker bar and extension to get some extra torque.

I doubt if its getting any hotter due to additional friction, assuming the primary chain is adjusted correctly. You might be getting better heat transfer though, due to the change in lubricant. In other words, some heat that was formerly being retained is no longer. Is it synthetic 20/50W? I'm no expert, but I think the lighter weight synthetic'll transfer heat better. Maybe somebody with expert knowledge could weigh in here...

I just changed my engine and tranny oil with new Mobil 1 V-twin 20w-50 and my XB12r sounds so, so much better, but a post on another link said I should not have used 20w-50 synthetic in the tranny... might damage the stator? any comment??

its the mobil gear lube that is in question.. the mobil one v-twin is fine...i have run it in harleys for over 250,000 miles.... some on the v-rod owners claimed clutch slipping when using the non-v-twin 15-50 mobil one.. i have used that type too and never had a single issue...

Are you sure you put oil in there? I can ride mine for a few hours no stop and the primary is only warm on the outside. Sounds like something has gone amiss.

yep, mobil 20w50 v twin. I used to run 80w90 mobil synth but after the primary swap I switched . The chain seems to be fine, I tension it like I always do an leave a little slack. maybe 1/2 to 1" or deflection.
