Agreed. So just to be anal retentive I will check the miles on the way home to match the miles on the way home yesterday with the Buell and we are DNO, (dead nuts on).

In which case it is safe to say the ECM flash did not through off the odometer but the TACH may still be another issue.

I think the point they're trying to make is that your odometer, which is based off of the speedometer, may now actually be more accurate. It's not the RPMs per a given speed that changed - that is driven solely by hard-linked mechanical parts - it's that the ECM/cluster's interpretation of the signal changed, resulting in the speedo change that people are noticing, and a corresponding change in the odo reading.

I still don't think the 3MPH @ highway speeds that people are reporting is enough to explain away the 15-20MPG gap between a lot of '08s and the '07s.

I thought it was the other way around? The odometer is now inaccurate as some folks have stated by way of comparison with the help of other drivers, car or bike.

I agreed with that statement about the tach. The reading is definitely different but the actual RPM's? I would have no way of checking that.

Also, agreed, none of this is responsible for 20 MPG per gallon.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but couldn't you just hook up a digital timing light with RPM readout to get a little better idea of the RPM? It probably would still be a little bit off, but at least it would be one more thing to check against.

Huh. Didn't know that about motorcycles not needing to do EPA fuel-economy tests. My mistake.

Regarding those ridiculously minor variations in odometer reading, tire radius affects this, and tire radius varies with pressure, weight on the bike, and tire wear. Not to mention any possible inaccuracies with the instruments...

Good Point Doubled. Maybe it can be checked that way. It reads approximately 200-300 different now. The odometer appears to be accurate. My ride home tonight revealed that my VW and my Buell are within a few tenths of a mile. Perfectly acceptable for a 40 mile ride. I thought I read posts that stated the opposite.

No sweat Cgameprogrammer. The #1 reason I am here is because there are very few things I know about Buell or any sport bike. One thing I am sticking to is that the DDFI III is different, has quirks and is the top reason we suffer in MPG.

I don't believe currently anyone outside the HD/Buell network has any good info on it yet. ....but I sure hope it's forthcoming.

ride safe.

New info over in a new thread. Updated info brought to us by one of the members. By far the most encouraging thing I have heard about the MPG issue yet! Thank you Mr. Cgameprogrammer!!!

Thought you all might like to know.

Arctic - Not sure if this info helps but I just went through a whole tank of all city riding and got about 123 miles before the light came on.

Thanks David. I got to about 117 my light cam on and I got gas at 125. My MPG calculated out to be 41 right on the nose.
The big difference is that you did all city and I did almost all hwy.

I do have a service appointment on 8/13 for a broken cable keeper / melted clutch cable. I will ask if there is any news on another new flash, newer than the flash they just flashed.

Going to a different dealer this time, they are just closer to home no other reason.

I hope you get it worked out Arctic. I wonder what other later build dates or 09's are reporting. I should be going on a 300 mile trek in two weeks so I will post back and let you know.

I ride mostly city in a hot climate, i have Aug,07 build. is my math right?
The best gas milage that i have recieved is 37mpg. That was with highway miles too. The tank holds 4.4 gallons with .83 reserve. I measure the milage by filling all the way up then resetting the trip. When the light comes on i have have used 3.6 gallons. My light comes on at about 120 miles st best, thats 33mpg. What am i missing?

Hello Quintssp:

The only thing you are missing is the other 20 MPG just like the rest of us.

Which would give you 57 MPG. Pretty much as advertised.

Hello All

Bringing this forum back up. I just got my 2008 Uly back in from the shop. A combination 5000 mile service & replacement of the rear rocker box (leaking oil)

Anyway, I got her back Tuesday & Today the Fuel light came on at 135miles!!!

This is a good thing, this is my commuting city mileage range. Previous to the 5K mile service, I was getting 110 miles when the fuel light went on. I was getting 145-155 on the open road/highway. So it would seem 135miles for city riding is a massive improvement!

Ill keep everyone posted. Maybe.. just maybe there was a new update out when I bike got serviced???
