First of all, hello everybody. I came here after searching for a buell community. Never rode a buell nor a badass bike, just an ol honda c-70 when i was young  So here is the topic purpose: how "crazy" is to start a xb9s project from ground zero? here a XB9sx cost 16500 USD... yeah  , and there are no used units on sale yet. Importing a used vehicle is a no no (legal issues) unless i can get a pristine bike and hack the ODO... i don't care if it has 15k miles, don't know if it is doable. (from time to time a "new" unit appears on ebay, but lets just forget about it for a moment) Other idea (tempting)... start the project from zero, get the pieces slowly. I had a look at the service manual, and at first glance, its not very detailed, am i wrong? So i want to hear some thoughts about this. I know there is one person here doing a XB-blast project, which i guess implies more difficulty on the hacking side. My first thoughts were start buying pieces from fleabay (aka ebay) and put on practice my meccano skills btw, what is the compatibility on engine mounts and other main parts like seat sub frame and forks of the different buell xb models? xb9s == xb12s? what about the firebolt? if you consider the last paragraph to be on the knowledge vault better, ill post there. just did to have a first glance of the problem. thanks in advance rodrigo | ||

The parts manual and the maintenance manual will take you through 99% if you know one end of a wrench from another, and the guys here can and do do a great job filling in those small gaps - sounds like a great project - you could probably outsource a lot of different parts as well. EZ | ||

I had a friend in Chile - not certain how the import laws are different - but we discussed one of us from the US coming to Chile and then having to sell the motorcycle or car to a local person for "emergency financial" reasons (like stayed in-country too long and ran "out of money. At the time, that would avoid the more than 200% import duty. ...just thinking | ||

Slaughter may be on to something with that, sounds like one sneaky way to do it  otherwise the compatibility is the same with the 9 and the 12 as long as you stick with S or SX models, don't go Ss or TT, although the SCG is pretty much the same as the S and SX just different suspension hardware | ||

thanks for the quick replies mates... i'll have a deeper read of the manual to get in touch with the guts of the bike other idea i had was some company that know how to part out methodically a bike, they disassemble it and send a "kit" in 2 or 3 steps as repair parts. but guess that service would cost a lot if ever existed anyway... thanks again for the thoughts cheers ps: hey Slaughter, are you offering your services to take such an odyssey?  | ||

Importing a used vehicle is a no no (legal issues) unless i can get a pristine bike and hack the ODO... i don't care if it has 15k miles, It's my understanding that you can buy a new instrument cluster that reads ZERO mile and install it on a used bike.  | ||

yup... nice idea Chainsaw, but that would require someone doing the job before importing it. I will consult a guy here that do the paperwork with the customs, and know very well how to deal with them. I know for sure used parts can be imported, as there is one very known shop that sells used car parts, imported from wrecked cars in europe | ||

Rodrigo, It is not out of the question but would have to wait for next year. Steve, i was kidding about asking such a big enterprise to you about diving there, a local businessman (Alfredo Etchegaray) formed part in the refloating of some parts, the range-finder or telemeter, and the eagle of the stern. afaik, the visibility down there is almost zero, Uruguay is not known for its scuba paradises . The "Rio de la Plata" is an estuary and thanks to the sediments from the Uruguay and Parana river, we have turbid waters | ||

I am currently building a xb form the ground up though my project has been put on a small hold due to the fact that i just had to buy a new car and I am in the process of moving. In about a month or so when i get my money back on track I shall pick my project back up and get hot and heavy on it and i will be posting all my progress on here so it may be of some help to you though it might be a slower moving project tat you are planing but i can help if you have any questions on this build. | ||

Hey Slaughter, as you say, you never know... the buell is not popular here, but showed the xb to people that dont even like bikes and they went crazy for the looks!! if i dont have one by the moment and if this trip ever happens, you got a strong buyer ...that would be very useful Firebolt, it would be nice we could start a wiki page, that way the information would be kept in order and easy to access. about the xb project, ill do some calcs on final prices and post an evaluation here. maybe you have an estimation? still building one myself tastes better ive read further the manuals and parts catalog, Ezblast was right, its way more documented than i thought at first glance. | ||

thanks for all the comments, ideas and help offers mates... this is getting hotter  checked fly tickets to Miami, they are "cheap", im considering doing a short trip, buy it, and depending on state/miles dismantle it or swap the ODO the yellow stock '03 xb9s "low" is the one bike im thinking of, any comments on this? by the 4th quarter of the year i may have the monies, still saving... cheers | ||

that would be a possibility... im about 5,120 miles from Washington DC, in a straight line i guess i still did not spoke with this person that know the details on importing vehicles or its parts | ||

Expat - that is kind of what I was thinking could work. Very curious to see if this might work for Rodrigo. Have somebody here ride to South America and then because of his "bad planning," he runs out of money - let's say... around Uruguay somewhere and then MUST sell the bike to get home. Worse things have happened. |
