M1, Harley credit is pretty good about getting financing to folks. Mine isnt in the greatest shape either...similar to you I had some crap in the past, divorce will lead you to just about give up on everything...yet I managed to get not just 1 bike but 2.

Well, It looks like I need a co-signer and I don't know if I want to do that. Starting June I can start saving about $670 a month for a down-payment (I could start saving $270 a month now as well) so maybe I'll just wait until then...

Yeah, I have some ugly stuff in my credit report. Next to nothing new though, the mistakes were made more than three and a half years ago. It's cool though, gotta pay for your mistakes :).

Just to keep you all updated...

#$@% INSURANCE COMPANIES!!!

I put $90 into my budget for insurance (18$ right now) thinking "There's no way they'll want 5X what I pay now...". Well, they don't want 5X what I pay now, they want 15X what I pay now. I guess there's no way I could have afforded it anyway. Thanks for doing all you could Dave :).

M1, pick a new isurance company then. I use American Modern through HD and they gave me a qoute of 3x my current M2 premium. I figured there was no way I was getting a 9R. I called them back and found that they cannot give a qoute for adding to a policy, and that was just for a new policy with only that bike.

HD Ins gave a quote with Dairyland, which was $450 instead of the other $900. That was a quote for two bikes. Just the 9R would have been nearly $650.

In the end, I got my 9R and ended up just adding to my current policy, and when it is renewal time, if the price is too high with the 9R, I will just switch them all to Dairyland.

When I was picking up the bike last week, the manager doing the paperwork told me that insurance is based on credit rating and not just driving history. I was totally unaware of that fact.

Shop around and don't give up hope.

Yeah, I'll start shopping around, but I can't imagine that anyone will be able to go far enough under $3300 a year to make it affordable. I was aware that ins. is based off of credit and driving history but sheesh, $3300??
I have a clean driving record...

I think I'll just stick with the CB750 for now. Top speed is comparable to the Buell XB12 it just takes a little longer to get there and quite frankly I don't need to go that fast unless I'm on a one way road w/ no cops (AKA Laguna Seca).

M1,

Where do you live? $3300/yr. sounds really high, unless you're living downtown New York City, San Francisco or some other such high rent area.

Shop around. Here in Michigan, State Farm has really good rates. Insurance premiums are just plain nuts. I've found rates 3X higher than what I'm paying now -- for the same coverage. It just depends on the insurance company, so shop around (a lot if necessary).

I live in a small town in Northern Arizona. Granted we have one of the largest numbers of rich people per capita in this county compared to the rest of the united states... I see 2-3 Ferrari's a day, LOTS of porsche's and H2's everywhere. I'll certainly shop around though but not until I can make sure I can get the loan. The quote I got was for a new policy and she said there is a discount for having two bikes on the same policy so maybe I'll have to keep my CB750 just to pay insurance on it :).

M1, I grew up in the now famous Chappaqua, NY but now own a house in the "slum" 10 minutes away. Same thing about rich people everywhere.

Anyway, give HD Insurance a call and see what they say about insuring both your bikes. It's toll free.

I've got very good credit, clean driving record and last year Progressive (through HD) was charging me over $400 which I thought was way high, since the guy I bought the bike from was 24 and paying only a little over $200.

Now this year my premium is almost $800!!!! I called and said "what the f*ck is this?" They said my M2 was reclassified as high performance blah blah blah. Still looking around but it seems most companies are about the same. Any suggestions???? Insurance companies piss me off.

If anyone is interested in one of the best insurance writers that I have run across, the name is Leslie Kay's insurance. They are used by quite a few dealers in Florida and the toll-free # is 1-866-367-1788. I have 2 bikes insured with them for $663.00.

well, Leslie Kay can't insure it as I live in AZ and she's only licensed in FL, so I called HOG and their company wants 4800 a year...

$%^& INSURANCE COMPANIES!!!

I have a perfect driving record, the sled I've got now blue books for just under $2000. 1/5 of the Buell yet they want 15-20 times the insurance?? Like Bcdaum says in his profile... It's easier to ride a fast bike slow than a slow bike fast.

$%^& INSURANCE COMPANIES!!!

Oh, BTW, I just got a call from my father... He said he'll cosign :(.

Prs, I learned that HD Insurance, at least in my neighborhood, has multiple carriers to choose from. If American Modern tries to bang me once I get the premium for 9, I already have a qoute through Dairyland (through HD) for about $460 for the 9, $315 for the M2 and $250 for my wife's Intruder.

My M2 renewal for October is about the same premium as last year, so that reclassification is BS. HD is actually good for something.

Maybe there is a real benefit to being in your late 30's and married?

Yeah, there must be a benefit to it. I'm tellin you though, I'm going to walk down to the courthouse square tonight and find all the little squids and kick their little no helmet, shorts wearing, t-shirt sporting, dye'd hair punk asses. Every frickin one of em. I can too, I've practiced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for three years. I can put them in the hospital faster than their damn bike can.

Oh, just got another quote... Markel ins. 4150 a year. It looks like I have to save my money and pay cash for it because that'll drop the price to about $500 a year.

I am 3 years into Tae Kwon Do training, and 2 months from my blackbelt. Had to quit because of nagging wrist injuries and I can't risk work for that.

Upside was that I could then convince my wife to allow the Firebolt.

You really have to move somewhere else.

Hey, Guess what.. Guide One was apparently sold to some other outfit, the name escapes me right now, But they turned around and sent me a bill on my H-D (just the one bike, not both of them) for almost a grand, !?WTF?! I was paying around $600 for both the Fat Boy and the XB9.. Nothing has changed on my end.. just the company side.. I called H-D Ins. and raised a few concerns.. Like it now says my H-D is registered in Florida? I live in Virginia! Also my almost stock bike was appraised at over $50,000.00 ... Hmmmm.. Now that I think of it.. maybe I should have shut up, paid up and then 'lost' the bike as it was stolen by some (volunteer) no good nik.. Oh, never mind.
I'm gonna give H-D a call to make sure everything is straight before they charge me $5K for the Buell as an exotic, handbuilt, one of a kind... Registered in Rome or some place..

Later,

Better make sure your insurance company doesn't see your profile on here. Your picture screams "!!!!!!!!!HIGH RISK!!!!!!!!!" to the insurance industry. ha ha.

Nice looking ride, by the way.

What? In his profile pic he's wearing a full face helmet, gloves, what looks like a good jacket and pants, good boots, is riding on what appears to be a controlled track, and is not excessively leaned over nor is he hanging off nor is he nowhere near dragging a peg. His profile pic looks like the perfect example of reasonable and prudent riding by an experienced rider, the epitimy of insurability.

Just another take on the situation. Probably too bad that I don't sell insurance. ;)

If anyone knows a place that will write me a policy I can afford I would really appreciate it... It has to be full coverage but I swear I don't ride like a 19yr old punk. I wear full protective gear ALWAYS (I grew up on dirtbikes, I know how fast shit happens). I have a perfect driving record...

It just pisses me off that some punk kid with a rich daddy can have dad buy him a bike and all he has to do is pay for the minimum insurance so it's affordable on a taco bell salary but here I am working my ass off 40 hrs a week making 16.25 an hour and I can't afford to BUY THE BIKE I WANT because the previously mentioned punk was driving down I17 @135 and became a statistic.

WTF is wrong with parents these days? The financing is good w/ a co-signer, I have a co-signer, I can afford it quite easily and STILL CAN'T BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!

M1,
Based on the adjusted quote you got above where the quote went from $4150 to $500 based solely on being financed or owned outright, your best bet may be to save the cash or take a lien out on something else for the cash. Sometimes there is no other option other than wait. There ain't nothing really wrong with riding a CB750 until things improve from an insurability standpoint.
And did I read that right that your Honda is only costing you $18/month to insure?
Sometimes the best option is to wait a bit. I'm starting to hear great rumors about the 2005 model bikes.

Yeah, you have a point I suppose. The problem with taking a lien on something else is that the only other thing I have that's worth anything is a 72 Mach-1 in "very" good shape. Nobody will give me a loan for 11K based on that because it's too old. I could sell it for $18K tomorrow, but I don't want to. Literally every other time I drive that car to Wal-Mart or something I either have someone waiting for me at my car or a piece of paper under my windshield wiper offering between 15K and 25K cash for it (One of the benefits of living in a rich town). I should start keeping those... My truck is worth 3500 (92 Sonoma GT #482/806) but there's already a "lien" on that...

Maybe I'll just rebuild the CB this winter or start saving money for an 05.. I think I could actually save enough to buy one... OK, almost. I could probably save 8K in one year. What have you heard about the 06's :)?

Don't get me wrong though, I'm still pissed.

Hey Mikej, I was just being smart but my point was he had the uniform on meaning he probably likes to ride fast and lean hard. Why else get all dressed-up? Although it seems to me insurance companies care more about your credit and whether or not you own your own home.

I have an old Ford Taurus that died on me just as my premium payment was due. Well, my parents had a car they didn't really use so they told me I could use it. Not really thinking about it, I just let my policy expire on the Taurus. I recently bought a new car and when I went back to my insurance company, they wanted to charge me $1500/yr because I let my policy run out without officially canceling. My credit is darn near perfect and my record is clean so they can take that and shove it. I got another quote for $600. Screw 'em.

M1,

What about a quote on a used M2? You can grab them for a song and a dance, they are tons of fun, and then maybe an XB when an insurance company sees your history?

My M2 is 2/3 the premium of my XB.

Maybe, but I'm pretty sure my CB sounds better (to me anyway) and parts are reasonably cheap (Except I can't find a rear wheel to save my life (And it might, mine's a tad bent)). There's just something about that 4to1 Kerker exhaust between 10,000 and 11,500 RPM's. I guess I just don't really want an M2. Great sled I'm sure but.. Like I read somewhere here the XB12R in black wins the swimsuit competition hands down. There's not another piece of machinery on the planet that I can spend a half hour drooling over. Maybe a 550 Maranello or Lister Storm I guess... OK and maybe a Gilette Vertigo.

2/3 the premium is still $2200 though so I would still have to pay cash for the bike. I guess the thing is, I like my Honda. About the only thing I would trade it for is an XB.

I think I'll have to wait.

@#$% INSURANCE COMPANIES AND RICH FATHERS WHO BUY TOYS FOR THEIR KIDS THAT DON'T HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO OWN THEM!
