gear change is the best bang for the buck by far and it doesnt hurt reliability like many mods do... ive done it to most of my bikes over the years.. | ||

Doc how long have you had these aluminum primary gear? Have you noticed any wear on the gears themselves? I'm wondering about longevity of the primary gears. And how much did you spend? | ||

Wantxbr; I haven't opened up the primary in a few months since I bumped my compression. Prior to breaking my bike into two pieces, I did not notice any wear. But I maybe had 3K plus miles than. I will tell you I ride my bike like I own it!! The only time the motor is under 4k rpm's is when I am on the freeway and struggling to be close to the speed limit! When I am in the back roads, it's "Hells Bells" I pound this bike for all its worth! Never dropping under 4K, charging HARD into the turns because I know my motor will start braking for me. Down shifting hard causing the back tire to break loose and get squirrely, going thru the turn as smoothly as possible, accelerating and grabbing the next gear to pound the bike into the next turn. Hell, I'm getting excited just from writing this! Please note: I never stunt, do hard accelerations of the line (don't have too), or compromise other vehicles. But when the roads open up in the mountains, I'm there! I also change fluids early. I am getting ready to change my primary chain and possibly the pad that is on the adjustment screw. Yea... same here, Buell lights suck at night. They just don't get around the turn quickly enough!! Need those Lexus lights that turn when you turn (lol). Have you done any research on HID's for Buell's, and if so could you forward your findings? I enjoy Mt. Laguna (S1) road to Julian. | ||

Go with the HID option before parting with cash for the Hellas. They work fine on my 07 Bolt run cooler and light up the road very well. Its looks like daylight. | ||

Are you talking about Sunrise Hwy? If so I like that road at either end not in the middle. If your not referring to sunrise then im not sure if i've been there or not. I'd have to ride on it, street names and places I forget easily...lol No I havn't done much research but I do know theres quite a bit of info on Badweb to answer most of your questions. Alot of money to have to throw at lighting. | ||

I got the car set of Ebay in Oz. I have the boxes mounted below the fairing in the breeze to keep them cool and cos they are too big to fit anywhere else. Have them on both low and high beam and they are working fine. Had to put a larger female fitting on the bike wiring but this will still let me plug in a std bulb if it all goes pearshaped. | ||

HID's were the best upgrade I've made. I'm thankful for them every night I ride. I got to play Momma duck running 28 between Robbinsville and Deal's Gap last weekend. I'm currently running a dual HID set-up with an 8300K high beam and super yellow 3500K low beam. Doom who is telling you this? Even the primary swap is fine and wont void your warranty. Its a stock item unless you go with what Point Doc has but still wouldn't void the warranty. EDIT One more thing. If adding a big bore kit, cams, free flowing exhaust, free flowing air box and 6 speed tranny doesn't void your warranty why would primary gearing?!?!?! Not a rant! These are thing I have done to Harleys that didn't void the warranty of the bike. (Message edited by WantXbr on May 21, 2008) | ||

So, I think my bike has the 9 primary gear on it. I was cruisin down the interstate today at about 80mph, and noticed I was turning 4k RPMs. Does that sound stock for an XB12R to you guys? | ||

I am point on in agreement with _doc. I also added the race ecm and race pipe. Coming from a normal 9s, this bike now rocks!!!! Keeping the front wheel on the ground is really proving to be a problem, hell I can start off in 2nd gear and not notice the difference. I bang HARD into the rev limiter at about 130-131ish area. Because the 9 gear is the only thing I kept from the last motor, I havn't seen any changes in gas mileage. I am averaging 48 miles to the gallon. I've seen as high as 56 and as low as 38( really pounding on her hard, course she just smiled at me). Setting up for the curves is really enjoyable. You will have the engine de-cell, but back on the throttle and the thing just wants to go. If your really into low end grunt, do it. If top end is what your after don't. On another note, I was wondering what would happen if I lowered the sprocket in the rear by 2 teeth(chain conversion)? Would I get top end back, but still have the take off power, what is your opiniions? | ||

If you put a smaller gear on the real wheel axle then you are neutralizing the gearing of the XB 9 primary. On chain driven cycles; when you increase the size of the rear sprocket, you are gearing down the bike. This will produce greater acceleration, and vise-versa for the front sprocket. From my understanding, three teeth for the rear sprocket is approximately equal to 1 tooth for the front sprocket. It sounds like you are trying to split the difference between the 9 and 12 gearing? Had my crank nut come loose and it tore up the 12 sprocket so we changed out to the 9 and it doesn't majorly limit the top speed...bout a 10% loss... but it def makes riding the 12 alot more fun... if your runnin down the street at 2k and roll quick to 1/2 trottle it stands right up on the back tire and splits... its alot of fun to ride now and it seems to keep it in a better rpm range for great roll on power on the freeways to... No more down shifting to make a quick jump to change lanes... lots more fun | ||

Wantxbr, Before I did the mods to my bike, I also wanted to split the difference. There was one problem, nobody makes a chain to fit the other gears. Secondly, if the stock XB9 chain break's I can go to any HD dealer and replace it. I'll be riding within two weeks, are you ready??? I'm not;  I have been so busy that I haven't been in the saddle for 3:4 weeks. It will take me half a day just to get "in rhythm" on the bike. | ||

Well I plan on getting the 36 tooth anyways. I know I can find something that will work. Mill the shoe down to squeeze the 9 chain on there, I'll find something. I never heard of any of these chains breaking before. Stretched out beyond adjustment but not breaking. Not saying it hasn't or wont happen. I think I can find a solution that will work with either the 9 or 12 primary. If you'r riding on a Sunday I'll be there, Monday I have to make plans for the kids to get picked up from school so I'd have to let you know. All other days I work. I'm riding this Monday with a friend for a short ride, maybe four hours or so. Maybe longer once were out and about. Feel like getting out earlier? How can you stay off your bike that long? Poor little neglected Buell.  | ||

LOL...going to school at nights and we are in the finals week!! I'm sufferin' badly!! My weekends are in the books, the only source of inspiration is to watch Wild Hogs before bed and to hear the rumble of the v-twin.  lol There is a guy on this site that has customized a chain for his bike. I believe he took some links from another chain to make it work, not sure but if interested I would look thru my emails to find the info. The chain; never had one break, but if one was going to break it will happen in the worst condition(s). I was just planning ahead for mr. murphy. |
