Hi,
My name is Jeff. I live in Zionsville, In(north side of Indy). I have been tweaking my stock ecm and have got it pretty much perfect. No more coughs or hiccups off idle. Revs quick and pulls really strong to red line. I basically uploaded the race ecm eeprom onto my stock ecm and tweaked the initial timing, cold start enrichenment, idle mixture, & acceleration enrichenment. I richened up the idle mixture(square)and disabled the idle closed loop circuit(causes lean pulses). It idles SOOO MUCH better. That also helped the lean stumble off of idle a tremendous amount. FYI I have a 2004 xb12r, gutted pipe w/valve, opened airbox, k&n filter. I made my own cable and am using ecmspy, which is very easy to use and understand. I would be willing to do the same for anyone around Indy that would like the race ecm installed or tps reset. You would want to have a similar set up to mine I would think to make it work as well(any after market pipe withe open airbox would be close). It only takes about 10 minutes to do. I had a lot of fun doing mine but there is nothing left to do now that it is running so good...
Regards, Jeff

Hey Jeff, I live about 8 miles west of you. As a matter of fact I cruised through Zionsville yesterday. Are you using a computer or PDA? I'm just getting into ECMSPY myself and if possible I may want/need some help before long.

Isn't it amazing what happens when you add just a little more fuel to these things (Accelerator enrichment and Idle)not to mention the first few blocks off idle...now if I could only get my cable back!!!!

Jeff,

I also would like to see your map. I am getting ready to do mine this weekend. I have cable and notes and would like to have a reference point. Thanks

I'm in Kokomo, IN and may either have to take you up on your offer or later on ask you a few questions on how to do it myself. Thanks for the kind offer!

Hey guys,
1. I am using an old laptop I had with windows millenium. You just have to find the correct driver for cable and the windows version you are running.
2. The single best improvement was going with the "square idle"(do a search to see what I am talking about) Ended up at 76 on the front cylinder and 72 on the rear. This is much richer than stock. I would highly recommend disabling the idle closed loop circuit or this change will be overidden by the closed loop(14.7:1 ratio) which made my bike idle rough simply because it pulsates between lean and rich which you can see in the o2 sensor voltage when the idle closed loop kicks in. This change also eliminated the off idle stumble I would occasionally get. Since you richen up the idle and disable the idle closed loop you have to ease off of the cold start enrichenment a few % points or it will idle too rich when cold. This is all in esmspy program and very easy to do btw.
I also bumped up the timing by 3-4 degrees @ idle and slightly above idle, This made it idle better and rev off of idle faster. I left the rest off the timing map alone and it seems to be great. These were really the only major changes I made to the race ecm data that I uploaded into my stock ecm(this is also free @ http://www.xoptiinside.com/downloads). I pretty much left the fuel map alone besides the idle and a couple hundred rpm above idle.
This might all sound complicated but once you make your cable and see it actually work it becomes very simple. I will try to post my eeprom data. If that doesnt work I am pretty sure I can email it to you if you would like. It has to be in ms word "text" format to work in ecmspy. Otherwise to speak to me directly feel free to call me at 317-441-7067. Thanks, Jeff

Heck, Jeff... I live about 2 hours north of Indy and this is tempting! Let me check my schedule, between school (16 credit hours) and work (45 hours a week) it gets kinda tight as far as spare time. I've got your number... thanks!!!

I'm in Dayton, Ohio and this is very tempting to me also. I already have the race filter and exhaust, just no race ecm. I'll have to get back with you.

The Buell race ECM mapping is proprietary information belonging to Buell Motorcycle Company. If anyone is distributing it without permission from BMC, they may be risking a very unhappy surprise.

Maybe, but in black and white text(hard to figure what tone he is taking) it looks like he is come down on me for wanting to help some people out with a few of the buell problems. For free on top of that. Just because I don't have a lot of posts does not mean that I do not know what I am doing. I got the eeprom data web link from a post on this forum to begin with http://www.xoptiinside.com/downloads. What has happened to the people in this world? I guess if he wants to kick me off for this good gesture then I don't think it is a forum for me anyways. Either way this is my stance. Jeff

It's not disputable IMO that the EEPROM contents are copyrighted by their respective owners. So as in other areas too, distributing copyrighted stuff without permission from rights owner might be an infringement of applicable law. This is the main reason, we do not host or distribute EEPROM data at the ecmspy.com site.

I as a programmer want my own rights and work respected and therefore have to do this with other peoples work also. As it always hits the site owner first, I'm with Blake in this case.

Regards,
Gunter

man this thread went south fast.

I was actually kinda interested in hearing all the geeky giberish since i don't have ecmspy.

wait a minute, wouldn't ecmspy also be a violation of copyright or something to that effect?

Why doesn't Buell collect all this 'tinkering' information done by dedicated Buellers and provide updates for the average guy. I'm all about fixing the hiccups in my S but I don't want to screw Buell in the process if that is in fact what this would be. I'm torn bros...It's great to have the help but that whole legal thing can be cumbersome me thinks.

Wow a guy come's on here to help and you crush him over his post count, At some point we were all at that same count!

The Buell's Fuel map is a generic one, It can be found in several locations on the WWW.

Even Direct Link Maps start with the stocker/race map....Nothing has been said on this before.. I would think in the court of law it would not be so good to even use the stocker as a starting point to make a new one, but we do.

Get over your selves...Jeez!

I agree with Firebolteric_ma. He was just tryin to help out. I do not know much about the ecm and I'm not willing to go get raped by a dealer. The prices for parts on the bike are already high enough, so I understand where he is coming from. Just tryin to save a few bucks....

Scenarios like this are always a flip of the coin. On one side people obviously want to be respected and sometimes paid for their work while others are open to either giving their work away for free or fixing someone elses product and educating people on the fix\update. We just need to remember that while to most of us this is our hobbies but to a few people its their job (aka income).

Im all for the DIY's and shall we say open source projects but we are still in a fragile time for this kind of thought process in my opinion.

A couple things to note though are that jeff's ecm updates are taylored to his bikes setup.

Jeff I think you should remove the following line from your second post.

quote:

I will try to post my eeprom data. If that doesnt work I am pretty sure I can email it to you if you would like. It has to be in ms word "text" format to work in ecmspy.

Thats the only thing in your post that I think puts you out on the fence. The only other thing is instead of posting the link to the Xoptiinside just put the name w/ a link to the other post on badweather that contains the link. That way its up to blake to remove the link and then people will just need to learn how to use google.

It would have been nice to see certain people that are barking about this just help you make your post a bit more complaint w/ the forums policies then crush a voice...

Goooooo makezine.com

Legally no one can charge for the Race OR Stock map, BUT they can charge a small fee for loading, storage or the consumables required to perform the operation, and of course their time. As long as you arent "Selling" an ECM Program Protected by Copyright its allowed by copyright law. Has anyone even checked to see if Buell HAS a copyright on them? Patent and Copyright laws are a strange thing and there are lots of "ifs" involved in the wording.

Don't forget the DCMA. If they use any encryption on these things (even moronic encryption) or classify anything in there as an anti-circumvention measure (even moronic ones), you probably can't change it without running afoul of the DCMA.

Of course, other laws give you an express right to modify something you own, or store a copy of something you purchased.

So its a morass of fubar and unenforcable law.

In general though, unless you are selling something you don't own, nobody is going to care much unless you tick them off for some other reason and they want to make you a hobby.

This is a tricky one because the only people who can use these maps are people with Buell motorcycles. And it is impossible to buy a Buell motorcycle without a stock ECM. So anyone that can make use of whatever he is sending them already has a "license" to the baseline he started with, and only his updates (which were his work) are "new".

Now if he was giving away a map developed by somebody (which can get expensive on the Dyno) without their permission, thats a whole new ballgame.

Note: This post protected by Double ROT-13, no reading authorized. By reading this post, you likely violated the DCMA. Pretty stupid, huh?

Buells are about making them your own -- I don't see a lawsuit happening unless someone tries to make a profit off of Eric's designs or products without his permission. Also, wouldn't this be a patent, not a copyright/trademark? I'm rusty on software stuff. If however it is a copyright/trademark issue they are only valid if you defend them -- if you don't EVERY TIME and diligently then you lose those protections and it becomes public domain. How do I know? Read up on Scientology and their lawsuits -- perfect example of wankers on a crusade, and luckily Buell has shown no indications that they plan to behave that way towards us. Anyways, here is the thing -- all of our bikes come with an ECM, and there is no protection on the data (that I have heard of), so we are modifying our own property, not stealing -- the "race" ECM is just an adjusted stock ECM -- it isn't different other than branding. If you are really worried just manually adjust all the setting in your stock ECM to the ones desired -- shazam, still your ECM.

As far as the DMCA, that is the most idiotic law besides the PATRIOT ACT and No Child Left Behind. That said, they can still bite your arse, so best to mind your Ps and Qs till someone gets rid of the damn thing! I do respect that people who run websites and boards these days have a good reason to be careful though!

Try to warn someone of possible trouble and get flamed in return?

Thanks Hogs, Dana (BadS1), Gunter (Id073897) et al, I sure do appreciate y'all helping to look out for the integrity and decorum of the place.

The thing to do is avoid advertising to the world that you are getting or uploading or providing (yes even free of charge) anything called a "race ecm" or anything else that can be confused with proprietary Buell information.

Giving something away for free has no effect upon copyright violations. The issue is in the illegal copying regardless of how it is then used, sold, given away. Imagine for instance someone giving away free copies of the latest/current big hit movie or whatnot.

Back on topic:

I couldn't disagree more strongly. The exhaust system has a major effect on fueling requirements.

True, but this is something they can adjust for on there own trial and error. My post is mainly to show how to get rid of the off idle & the poor idle situation. You in all of your infinite forum wisdom should know your attitude and demeaner is hard to decipher in text. Maybe I took it wrong. There are a lot of people who just like being negative about any and everything. Maybe I took it wrong??? Jeff

Because this thread has taken a turn far, far, far, from my intent, I am withdrawing my offer to help anyone by sending them my eeprom. However, if ya want to call me I will tell you exactly what to change to make it run tremendously better. Unless someone says it is illegal to talk about the ECM(would have surprised me before, but not now: )Thanks to everyone else that supported me! Back to being a LURKER, Jeff
