1) Mobile 1 Syn 20W50 Vtwin
2) Harley Formula +1
3) If we gave you a part no., I dont think it would do you any good outside a HD dealer. They're not that expensive. (from 08 parts manual)63806-00Y.

I should have said I have an 03 XB 9 S.

Where do you get the V Twin 20W50?

My manual never mentioned the filter part #
anywhere

Thank you

1. Mobil 1 15W50 is the right oil. The Vee Twin oil is for Harley's. It has less friction reducing additives, and is very expensive - ten bucks a quart.

2. Harley Formula + seems to be the preferred thing here, mainly to reduce corrosion of the electrical stator.

3. Here is a list of Buell compatible filters. I get the SuperTechs at Wally world, cost about two bucks.

Wal-Mart Super Tech = ST4967
Fram = PH4967
AC = PF1233
Motorcraft = FL836
STP = S4967
k&n/ kn 177
wix/ 51394
bosch/ 3311
purolator/L14476
hd/63806-004
acdelco/pf1233
napa/1394

Just for practice, you might try to use the Knowledge Vault on this site for this kind of information.

Since the XB line has been out for about five years, most of this type of information has been discussed at great length, as you might imagine.

Thank you Jon,

I got the 15W50 Mobil 1 at Wally world for about 23.00 per gallon. Thanks for the list of filters, that is great!

For what its worth, when I asked a dyno engineer from Harley what oil I should run...The Mobile 1 20W50 Syn VTwin was what I was told to use. I figure a guy who blows up motors everyday for a livingusing different fluids and operating temps should know his stuff.

No matter what, I'd use the Formula+ primary fluid. That seems to be the unanimous choice.

I read the recent oil posts and was looking for that oil. They just didn't have it when I went to look. That is why I asked if the 15W50 was o.k.
Thank you

I use Amsoil synthetic 20w-50 in both motor and primary. Works great for me. Plus I only have to keep one type of oil on hand for the bike. I also use the Amsoil filter.

Redline Manual Transmission Lube (MTL) comes highly recommended from a well-known Buell racer.

>>>#1 - I bought a gallon of Mobil 1 15/50. Is this ok to use?

Yes, good stuff.

>>>#2 - What kind of lube are people running in the primary?

Any 20/50 engine oil is okay - but I would shy away from synthetic in there. Harley sells an oil for the tranny/primary. I have been using Valvoline 20/50 there with no ill effects.

>>>#3 - What is the part # for the oil filterand where can I buy one besides dealer?

Dunno.

Harley recommends using either Formula+ or HD Syn 3. I have tried both, and there does not seem to be a noticeable difference between the two performance wise. I have noticed that the Syn 3 comes out much cleaner when I change it than the Formula +.

+1 more on Dennis. Amsoil mv20w50 in both holes.I use a wix filter though. Gives you a big kick in the pants and my fan hardly ever runs other than after shut off.

Another +1 for the Amsoil. Just put it in and it made for smoother, less clunky shifts. $10 bucks a quart for it too. I'm sure the Mobil 1 is good stuff as well.

I have used the Mobile 1 15W50 on several of my bikes for many years with good results.

Good results for me means thousands of miles with no problems. I like to cut my filters open and inspect for "debris", check my plugs for oil contamination, and keep track of oil usage.

When I get to 2,000 miles that is what is going into my XB12Ss along with a Mobil 1 oil filter.

I also think that Amsoil is a fine oil, but you can't always find it, so for me that is a deal breaker. Mobile 1 is available everywhere, it is reasonably priced, well developed and proven, so why not go with it.

I know that Harley recommends their oil, that is how they make a lot of money, ... besides, ... what else would they recommend? Harley oil is expensive too, and I doubt that it is any better than any other quality oil.

Anyone know who makes the Harley oil for them?

Might be Amsoil.
