As the title says, My cousin and I are going from NYC to Rhode Island next weekend, and are looking for a nice ride. Anyone from Connecticut have any advice on a nice route?

you may want to pop into the NEBO board, some of the RI and MA guys may be able to point in the right direction.

As a basic outline, I would go rte 15 to rte 66 to rte 6 into RI. This would put you up in Providence and keep you off 95. If your looking to go to the shore I would go rte 15 to rte 66 to rte 16 (I live near this intersection) to rte 2 (hold your money because your going to go near the casinos) into RI. I have never done either but it would keep you off 95. Now if your just looking to get there and don't care about psyco drivers, traffic jams, radar, etc. just go 95. Depending on the time of day it might just be a straight shot. Sometimes 95 is clear and boring other times its a dangerous slow odyssey. Good luck.

Where's your destination here in RI? North or southern part of state?

I dodged a folding ladder on I-84 last year! Avoid at all costs! (The NY part is fine though : ) )

+1 for doing anything you can to stay off I95. Its awful!

You need to take an interstate at some point, and I highly recommend 84 over 95.

Try 84 East to 291 East to Route 66 East. From 66 East, you have a bunch of choices of good roads (Route 2 is a highway so keep that in mind). Just look at google maps and figure out which roads look good to get you to the part of RI you need to get to.

Yeah, I definitely am staying the F*k off 95! I know all about that. I sat with my cousin today and we decided to go through Long Island to Orient Point and catch the ferry across to Mystic. We are staying in Newport at my other cousin's Bed & Breakfast. We just want a nice cruise, and to avoid highways as much as possible. Thanks for the input.

The Merritt Parkway is nice then you could hop onto 44 to Providence.

Yeah, my friend belongs to the AMCA and goes to the Hebron swap meet, so I went last year and took the Merritt Pkway. That was such a nice ride.

The Merritt is a very nice ride. I will never go into/out of NYC going down 95. I will always take the Merritt.

From the Merritt I think it you can go 91 north to 84 to 44 or something like that.

Without checking a map, you can hit 138 anywhere that will bring you right into Newport. I just don't know where 138 goes after Newport going south/west.

Rte 15 is the merritt. It is a nice road but like the taco-nick (tacnic parkway in new york) there are no real on ramps so you are more likely to rear and a slow merging car when taking the curves in a spirited manner. If a nice ride stay off both 96 and 84 got with 15 and 66 as I discussed above. If you want one long crazy route hitting all the nicest roads and sites I can offer your route 82 with the swing bridge on which you cross the ct river ( also gillette's castle is near by), route 11 which is a 5 mile divided highway to no where that is great for speed runs (drive down it one way looking for law enforcement then back and forth a whatever speed), my section of 66 with its weekend parade of harley posers and fake biker bars (or a real biker bar in middletown on 66 - the red dog) etc. etc. etc.
