Do you knock off the mounting brackets for the cowl, or do you keep them on? Do they do anything else other than hold the cowl on? Thank you.

Yeah the only purpose of the front two threaded tabs is for securing the chin fairing and also the lower mounting point on the lower side fairings. I am sure you could remove them with a cutting wheel and grinder, along with all the other mounting brackets as well if your going totally naked with it.
