Only thing that works is the clock and the RPM's. Everything else reads zero - MPH, Miles, odometer, etc. Has anyone had this before and can give me advice/help. I am ordering a new odometer this Monday. Bike has 4000 miles and is 60 days old

Most likely your speedo sensor. I have had two go out. Did it happen right after you revved the motor to the rev limiter? This is how mine went out both times. Mine has been covered under warranty twice.

Hey Captain, I recognized the Harley sales guy from the pics of your bike in the link you posted in another thread, so I checked your profile.

So I see you're here in Austin with me. I don't really know anybody around here that rides Buell, personally. I tend to be solo most of the time.

When do you usually ride? I go out Saturday mornings early and hit the hill country pretty regularly because my wife sleeps in. Care to join sometime?

Hook 'em,
-D

Dmuz,

I ride my bike to work a lot. I work at UT, so parking is easier on the bike. I ride on the weekends in the hill country. I would love to go ride with you some saturday morning. I know next weekend is booked with a family thing. I live in south austin. I know some pretty good rides starting off of 1626 and heading west. Just so you know, I am not a real fast rider. I gave that up a few years ago.

DONT GET THE NEW ODO!!!!!!

It's just your speedo sensor. A problem for everything but the XB9S. Don't know about the 12's yet, but I bet they are fixed as well.

There is supposed to be a new part out with built in filter, but they have not shown up yet (that we have heard).

I am building up another batch of filters that fix the problem can be easily soldered into the stock speedo sensor replacement part (sensor, wire, and connector). They will probably be together within two weeks, but will try and put a rush on it for you.

Email me a shipping address off line. If you are not comfortable soldering, or can't find someone who is, you can send me a sensor assembly and I will solder in the filter for you, but it would be a lot faster and easier if you installed it yourself on a stock replacement part you get, even if you just walk into your local tv repair shop and drop them a $20 to do it while you wait.

If you are still under warranty, get them to replace the sensor, and as soon as you leave the lot disconnect the connector before it blows again. Then add my filter to the one they give you.

Bill

Bill
thank you for the help. But I am having a serious problem right now with the bike/dealership. In regard to warranty and many other issues. As for your filter they have said in short order that I can forget about the warranty if I decide to do that. So I hope to have these issues finished soon.

LOL...that's why we don't TELL the dealership these things. <jk>

Your bike's under warranty. Tell them to order the damned part and call you when it comes in to come and get it installed. There should be no ifs, ands, or buts about this. Two months off the showroom floor? There's no way that COULDN'T be covered under warranty.

Captain,

Just sent you an email. I live down south and don't ride really fast either, sounds like we're neighbors.

Cheers,
D

CKJ... unless you have decided to just abandon the dealership (which is probably the best decision), just have them keep replacing the sensors as they blow. I bet you will go through at least two before the warranty is dead.

The day before the warranty expires, install my filter, which I will send to you ahead of time.

The problem is that idiot dealers can very easily make it not worth it to you to use your warranty. They can sit on the bike for a week at a time for each repair, "forget" to have parts in stock and have to reschedule another week long delay, pee in the oil tank, you name it.

Sorry your dealer sucks. So do both of mine, I now have to drive to Dayton (60 miles) for a good one.

"The problem is that idiot dealers can very easily make it not worth it to you to use your warranty. "

That's partly where lemon laws stem from and there are very specific rules to follow in states with lemon law regulations. Time without use of the product is one common factor. If the dealership doesn't want to eat the bike they'd best not play the delay game, and if they don't want to get hit with a defrauding the public criminal charge they'd best not pee in the oil tank.

CKJ,
If you are having serious dealership issues then it's time to directly contact Buell/Harley customer service and calmly and accurately detail the issues to them, then sit back and watch the picture change. And when the dust settles find a new dealership if at all possible.
Your profile does not list a location or dealership. Difficult for someone to help more without at least regional data.

You hit it on the head - long delays in ordering the parts and needing to keep the bike for a week, etc.
Also, Mikej I agree and have given the dealership a week to settle these problems honestly before I am forced to start legal action.

I simply do not understand this, can someone from a dealership chime in?

My question is this. In a case such as this, where you are waiting for one part, why, oh WHY, can you not simply have the part ordered and get called WHEN IT COMES IN to go and have the work done? What is the deal with the dealership needing to hang onto the bike through this?

Mikes mirror was replaced under warranty. He took it up to have it looked at and them to give him the official "yes we'll replace it". They ordered the part, called him when it arrived, now he has to make an appointment to have it put on. The only thing I don't get is why someone can't stop and put the thing on while he waits, goodness knows he's spent enough money there on all the Buell add on goodies...

I meant to say this must be a dealership thing, and is different from dealer to dealer...

Glitch,
He needs to talk with either the service manager or the shop owner. Putting on a mirror should be a gratis type of labor charge.

Darthane,
Here's a little story of what happened to someone I knew:
Blast speedo started acting up under warranty.
Called dealership, told to bring in bike.
Brought in bike, verified erratic speedo, told to leave bike overnight, found ride home.
Found ride back to dealership next day to retrieve bike.
Their process specified they were to wipe off the end of the sensor and reinstall it.
Rode Blast home and the speedo started acting up again on the way. Dealership was now closed for the evening.
Called the next day and was told to bring it back in.
Brought bike back in the following day, dropped it off, found a ride home.
Found a ride back the next day to retrieve the bike.
This time they went ahead and replaced the sensor assembly.
Four trips to the dealership and almost a week in time to replace a component that I have down to a 15 minute job on my bike.
Sometimes the system is the problem more than the problems are.

Please don't tell me the shop you're dealing with has a two week or longer waiting list for service work.

These are the reasons many of us do our own work as much as possible, and the reason many of us will pay out of pocket for components that fail under warranty. My time is worth more to me than the hassle of getting the sensor repaired under warranty and the multiple trips and time and arrangement of transportation to and from the shop to get it repaired and to get the failure recorded in the problem tracking system.

Talk to the dealership and ask them if there is anything you can do to help them improve their processes and customer service. My local shop was actively trying to improve their process when they moved to their new location and was at times very appreciative of any input and suggestions people were willing to calmly give them.

I apologize for the misstatement -- what I meant to say is when I have brought the bike in before they have kept the bike for a week and the exact same thing as MIKEJ happened-having to bring the bike back every day for 4 days b/c they can't do the work properly. But I have learned a lesson that everyone here seems to already know - DO THE WORK YOUR SELF. And I don't think you guys can blame me for wanting to get rid of this problem (bike and dealership) and dare I say it - buy a Japanese bike

I'm sure there are plenty of Japanese and Italian shops that are every bit as bad.

The German shops might be as well, but the BMW shop I went in had probably a 500% margin on every last thing in the shop... those BMW buyers must have WAY too much money on their hands. For that kinda margin, I bet they give GREAT service.

Before I bought the XB9S I went to a Suzuki dealer near me, to ask about the SV1000. When the sales guy found out I wanted information and was going to look other places as well, he said, and I quote, "You're wasting my time." I've not been back. When I told Scott all I wanted was information on the Buell, he started telling me all about the differences between the R & the S.

Quality of dealerships and bikes don't follow along the lines of any particular nationality. Any yahoo can start a dealership and, quite frankly, I think most of them do.
