Anyone running an open airbox and 2006 or newer airbox cover? My understanding is '06 and newer airbox covers are like my '06 Ss and have the air intake right behind the fuel cap. It looks like the air filter is right behind this intake and an open airbox would expose it. Are there any problems or concerns with running an open airbox in the rain? Thanks, Nels |

I ran my 06 with an open airbox for about 6 months here in the Northwest (rains all the freaking time). I ended up putting an 07 Cover back over the air filter to get some protection. The problem I had is after about 45 min in heavy rain was that the bike would hesitate and cough if I rolled on the throttle above 3K rpm. In light rain I never had any issues. But since I commute pretty much year around I decided to put the cover on. |

Xbswede, Thanks for the reply. That's pretty much what I was thinking. I could see how heavy rains could result in some water getting in and causing the engine to stutter. I removed the aluminum mesh from the air intake and thought it would look pretty cool to have the air filter visible. I don't plan on riding in heavy rain but sometimes you can help but get caught in it. Nels |

Yeah, I'm in Olympia Washington and I don't plan on doing the open airbox precisely because of the rain issue -- maybe if I move to a dryer area I'll do it but not around here. |

Nope -- I was solo today (poor me), but I do ride those roads a bunch and my black and red R is the only one I have seen so far. I know I am the only one with that helmet! I was riding down from Lynnwood today (met a very cool Bueller and his wife at a dealership up there), got into town around 4pm or so. I stopped in to check out some of the local motorcycle instructors doing their advanced knee dragging stuff behind the Lacey Target, and then I took a spin out to the roundabout at Evergreen -- love that thing. Took some pics while I was there -- one of them is my new profile pic actually. Bucoda/Delphi huh? I really like that area, love the back roads on either side of I-5. We should meet up sometime, send me a PM or shoot me an email (it's my Badweb screen name @gmail.com). (Message edited by retrittion on May 05, 2008) |

I've added drain holes to the open airbox's and CIA cover kits that I've done. Not sure if it helps or not, but I was thinking about the poor bikes that get left outside while the owners are a work or something. I could see the moisture in an airbox leading to a siezed motor if not rectified. |

I had the open airbox and cold air induction kit on my Uly, now i have the open airbox on my XB12SS. Only issue i have with rain is if im out for a long time in heavy rain, it will occasionally cough, but nothing to worry about. Heres a tip, remove the lower left screw that holds down the lower inner airbox. This allows any water that builds up to drain out rather than puddle up inside the airbox.
