Well, I am into week 3 for a new (only 87 miles!) XB12Ss having electrical issues. First time at the dealership, they said the battery voltage fluctuated and set off the check engine light. They charged the battery. No problems for 3 days. Go out for a short ride, check engine light comes on, turn the bike off and it's DOA. Dealership picks the bike up from my home and after a week, the new voltage regulator showed up along with a new battery. Bike still drains the current. Service tech stated he believes there is a short somewhere. If that is not located, he will call Buell Tech. In the mean time, spent a wad of cash and no bike. Thinking about asking for a refund and have them find me another 12Ss...comments?

I would give the tech some time to work first. He appears to be trying.

there are mant threads in the vault that have the short problem. On my big , 2005 xb9sx the wire running from the fuel pump to teh fuse box was chafed under hte shrouding nd would short inermidintly. the dealer changed the entire wiring harness adn all had been well for 17000 miles.

check,- stator wire coming from the stator to the starter ( remove the primary cover)
- teh fuel pump power wire
- up near the steering head
-check for loose grounds
-check the wires around the battery because it can shift and chafe wires.

I think that is all i have read but Im sure somone else can come up wwith more.
good luck

Man, sounds just like the 1125 problems. Don't the new XBs have DDFI 3? Anyone know if the ECM is the same? The ECMs on the 1125s are being reprogrammed for charging/draining problems.

C2...I agree. He is trying...did not mean to come across as blaming him. Just frustrated here with a new bike that has spennt more time at the dealer than on the road!

Spatten...good point about the ECM. I will ask tomorrow.

I had a short problem on my2004 XB12S, the short was at the location of where the wiring harness comes out of the light housing and wraps around the left side of the neck of the frame. Right at this point the RED wire was shorting to the frame.

Hope this helps....

Verdict is in...bad stator! Too bad a complete system check was not performed last week when the part could have been ordered and I could have my bike now.

Is this typical of dealer service? Should I have bought another brand? yes, I am somewhat ticked!

"Is this typical of dealer service? "

I hate to say it but for many HD/BUELL places YES.

I highly recommend you get the service manual and try to learn and do what you can yourself.
There are some really good service techs that are members here at bad web. I think some of them would agree as well.

Well, the verdict is in! The new stator arrived yesterday and when they went to put it in, the rotor was missing two magnets! Another part has been ordered to arrive on Monday. The service tech swears that the problem has been positively identified and will be correct. He also contacted Buell to let them know that the bike only has 80 miles on it and that they need to perform an internal audit on their quality control.

I sent a signed letter to Erik Buell himself on Monday explaining how QA is supposed to work from an engineering point of view and that this bike should have never left his factory.
