I bought a used muffler off e-bay with the front dented pretty good underneath. The rest of the bottom was pretty well scratched up as well.

When I got it back from Kevin, it was all repaired and looked great.

Good job Kevin!

It is simply low class and out of line to badmouth or belittle another man's professional hard work, especially when it is so well respected and well-proven.

The idea that anyone can blindly cut and weld there way to a comparable performing muffler with little effort is inane.

If we don't have something positive or constructive to contribute, then quite is a good alternative.

OK here's some back ground...sorry...lots of banter and back and forth and miss understandings and messed up spelllings...took me a bit to get through...and I've been busy as hell at work...

1. I didn't like the stock muffler...too quiet.

2. I liked the sound of the drummer, the jardine, the micron, the sport race can (damn them for not selling it any more!) and wanted something similar for my bike.

3. When it came down to it...I didn't want, nor was I able to spend that much money on a new or modified can (I even had terrific offers - thanks Jim)...I just didn't have the money for it.

4. I'm a Manufacturing Engineer with design skills, some machining skills, some decent fab skills, the access to and ability to use a water jet to cut metal (that's how I/we made the insert plate and end cap).

5. I also have the good fortune to have a few good friends that work for Guinness and pizza (and then other favors and help in return) - that have welding skills, good info on material sources (not free matl...just good references to where they found good prices), have computer skills to do the ECM upgrades for me.

6. This was a winter project on MY bike, something to keep me busy during the winter and have some personal satisfaction during the rest of my ownership of this bike that I made some of the parts on it with my own hands and with the assistance of friends.

Here is what I have for an end result:

1. Good memories of having some friends over for some pizza and beer and talking bikes and how to go about cutting this and welding that and how to put this back together...

2. A 'new' can that sounds great! Cut the steel for it myself, packed it myself, painted it myself, put it all together myself, put it on the bike myself...

3. An exhaust tip that was about 5" inches too long - Pleasant Street in Grafton took the first knock from it.

4. An exhaust tip that got cut down about 2" inches in a real hurry - the night before leaving for MBV.

5. An exhaust tip that was still 3" too long - Wolf Pen Gap Road ripped the end plate right out of the can - the holes in the can to bolt it in suddenly got re-worked into slotted holes.

6. I finally learned from some trial and error (completely free of dyno time and fees) that the tip was too long...it is now nicely trimmed down and polished...

7. The end plate has been reworked to a welded assembly to the can (though you can't see that it was welded...) - the bolts just wouldn't hold the plate in after the Wolf got to it. The can has been repainted...the end plate and tip polished and looks sharp...it's a bigger (thicker pipe) than than Kevin's design...PERSONALLY (very important point there) I think it looks better...

8. Performance? The bike is fun to ride - loves the corners - plenty of torque - is still a wheely machine (if only I was skilled at them) but I can tell you the front end likes to come up a lot more on it's way out of a turn than it did before! We (NEBO) have a couple of guys that work at the two of the local stealerships (oops...I meant dealerships)...one of them is going to be doing some open Dyno days so we can get a chart on how our bikes are performing...we don't get to tune on it but we do get to see what the bikes performance looks like on a piece of paper (us engineering types LOVE data on paper).

When that is available...I'll put it up...if I don't match Kevin's numbers...I don't give a flying (insert your favorite deletable explative here)...I got everything I wanted out of it...fun...personal satisfaction of building my own stuff...spent less money...had another excuse to spend some time with friends...oh yeah - I'm not interested in selling it or going into business to sell it...so I'm not worried about wether or not it performs like or as good as or better than any other can out on the market.

Kevin makes a nice product...he wanted to go into business to sell it...he should make money on it...that end cap is a nice piece of work...I admire the engineering and programming and machining that went into it...he put time and money into it...he should make a profit...

I just didn't/don't have the money to pay for it...and personally (even knowing the costs associated with what work he put into it) don't think it's worth $400...again that is my PERSONAL opinion...it's an opinion NOT a fact...somebody stated earlier that a product is worth as much as somebody is willing to pay for it - and that is absolutely right...I'm just not one of the people willing to pay that much for it.

Everybody happy now?

"The end plate has been reworked to a welded assembly to the can (though you can't see that it was welded...)"

Just curious, what is your estimate of how many total man-hours, including those contributed by all your friends, were invested to achieve your current/final home-built muffler? Be sure to include the testing and trial and error efforts too.

Now having arrived at what you deem a good final design with a working prototype, how many hours would you estimate would be required for you to personally convert another used stock muffler to a showroom quality version of your current/final home-built version?

I dig home-built stuff too.

The fact remains that it is pretty miserable to claim in a public forum that the professional high-quality and well-respected work of others is not worth the selling price. That amounts to little more than badmouthing in my view.

I think the more thoughtful and respectful expression would be more akin to "I enjoy and thus prefer to have fun making my own home built muffler." Nothing at all wrong with that.

And here's some good news: Have no worries, since Kevin understands well how to make a muffler end-cap hold fast.

I respectfully disagree. Do you think $50k west coast chopper is worth it's asking price? I don't think anyone of sound mind would exclude the amount of work and skill needed to build one, but for most it's all of no use.

Keep in mind no one has accoused Kevin of a poor product, shoddy worksmanship or anything of the like.

Blake - I'll put up a tally of hours and dollars when I get home...I'm on a business trip in MI at the moment with only a few minutes here and there, I want to think on it and put up an honest number.

The fact remains that it is pretty miserable to claim in a public forum that the professional high-quality and well-respected work of others is not worth the selling price. That amounts to little more than badmouthing in my view.

This seems to be the root of all evil on this thread...let me try to set this straight...again...

A price bared by the market is a fair price...if you want to sell something for $100.00 and people buy it for that then the price is correct. No insult to Kevin in the least - he makes a good product (as I have mentioned previously) and he is in business to make a profit (I don't know anybody that is in business to make a loss)...he is doing well.

Let me ask you a question: Do you shop at Target or Walmart for shirts? I can buy nice shirts from those places for $15-$35 or I can go to Macy's and buy a shirt for $50-$80...both markets are selling things so they are both priced correctly...which one is worth the price to you, the more expensive shirts are worth it to somebody - why don't you agree with them?

I buy shirts because I cannot make them very well...

I made a muffler rather than buy one because I can and enjoy the work. This was made clear in my early posting...I have the skills and enjoy the work...THEREFORE...$400 to somebody else that I can do for less...is not worth the expenditure to me...

I didn't say that Kevin is crazy for asking that kind of money...I said it wasn't worth it to me. That is a VERY subjective thing, it is my opinion...not a fact

Herein lies the controversy:

THEREFORE...$400 to somebody else that I can do for less...is not worth the expenditure to me...

Until you dyno your muffler, you do not know that you are creating a similar product yourself.

Now, if you just want more noise and less back pressure, I'm confident you should do that at home.

Stating that a home mod is on par with the Drummer's performance, with no dyno results, is not a fair statement.

Stating that you like the sound as much as a Drummer, and it that it "feels" fast, would be a fair statement.

Can we get past the whole "magical horesepower" myth fo the drummer muffler? It doesn't do anything that any other muffler makes for an XB. It's middle of the road when it comes to power increases, so stop touting it as something more.

It's a nice package, for sure, but not a god send.

As I said before, for half the price, my Spec Ops muffler make better power. Maybe Odie should be charging $600 for his then?

No one buys the Drummer for peak power. Look at the power spread, there is no hole in the torque curve.

READ THE HORSEPOWER SHOOTOUT it is all explained there.
