Is it common to burn oil throughout the break in period. i just put 200 miles on my 08 XB12Ss and shes low on oil. | ||

I have 4800 miles on my 08 XB12R and it is an oil pig. I've got it in the shop right now for that and other problems. It seems to be a common problem with these bikes. | ||

I have an 05 XB12R. I would like to see some other people with the 08's chime in here. With the revised oiling system I wonder if there is a connection. I have the typical add to the full line with an oil change then it quickly consumes down to the add mark and stays there until the next oil change. Normal for the older oiling system but some of the 08's seem to have this oil consumption problem. | ||

"Up to a quart" is considered "in spec" during the first 1,000 miles. Just keep an eye on it; all bikes are different. For instance, breaking in my 06 Uly with the "hard n fast" method I used about 1/2 quart total. My S2, on the other hand, goes through about a quart every 3000 miles. I suspect a bad valve guide on that one...but have too much fun riding it to take it apart to see, LOL. | ||

If you keep filling it to the full mark on the dipstick, you will be forever adding oil. Change your oil and put in exactly 2.5 quarts. Take a ride to warm up your engine, turn it off and put it on it's side stand, let it sit for a few minutes and then check your level. This is now the level you should fill to when adding oil. My guess is that you are blowing all that oil you add into the airbox. | ||

My guess is that you are blowing all that oil you add into the airbox I will second that thought. Check your oil when it is cold, then take it out for a long ride and check it again. You will be amazed at how much it rises on the stick when hot. Also, make sure you are checking it with the bike on the side stand(not standing straight up), and screw the dipstick all the way in to check. Overfilling will result in higher oil consumption. | ||

I have rerouted the hoses to the front near the oil cooler with a filtered breather on it. Bike runs much better than before and no oil in the airbox. | ||

Only 200mi so far on mine ('08 TT), but the oil level is holding about 1/3 up from the add mark. Above 3k as much as possible, and below 5k. |
