I thought the fan isnt coming on as much as it ought to ..

...perhaps your CHT sensor is bad - a proper reading from it has an impact on the majority of what your engine is doing, including fan operation. Note: this should result in a check engine light, and you can check for error codes by jumping a pair of wires in your test connection and keying on.

The CHT is located smack dab in the middle of the rear rocker cover. You can see it if you remove the airbox and (if memory serves) it has a single gray wire coming out of it. You might want to check that for damage (AFTER checking for codes, to save yourself the time and effort if that's not the problem).

Wow, 50 miles to the tank? That's definitely something to be worried about!

I'm no expert but resetting the TPS will not, in and of itself, cure your engine performance issues.

oh sorry..

my engine temp sensor was bad. that was preventing my fan from kicking on. I replaced it.

reset the tps and it still runs bad

I replaced the plugs to find there was a nick in one thread in the rear plug. i was hypothetically only putting it 5mm into the hole when it needed to go another 5. I got it properly seated and have been all grins since

...your temp sensor was bad, but it DIDN'T trigger a check engine light?

Glad you got it sorted out - do you still live over there just east of Telegraph?

Theoretically with a bad temp sensor, the engine may not have left cold-start mode. That would explain the thirsty habit....but surprising the CEL didn't come on. Your bulb isn't dead, is it?

If the sensor gives a reading that is within a believable range, there will be no code. For example, if the temp. sensor is telling the ecm that it is 150 deg. when it is actually 300+ deg, the bike will run poorly, but the since the ecm is seeing a temp. that is possible, it will not set a code. Usually a code will set due to an open or shorted circuit, which will result in an unbelievable reading.
