I was looking through my manual last night to figure out how to check and adjust the static timing on my 2005 XB12S. I notice that American Sport Bike sells a transparent window that goes in place of the timing plug. Is it necessary or easier to use the clear plug from American Sport Bike? Are there any tricks to make checking the timing easier? The plug seems like it would make using a timing light/gun possible? Is that the case? Thanks |

If it's like what I had for my Sportster, it "replaces" the metal plug just while timing with the light. It's to keep the hot oil inside (rather than on you) while allowing you to see the marks. After the bike is timed the clear plug comes off and the metal one goes back on. (Message edited by metalstorm on April 21, 2008) |

I've found that timing with a light is MORE innaccurate than static timing, thus rendering the clear plug unnecessary. It's damn near impossible to see the line when timing with a light. |

The timing plug with window can be found on American Sport Bike here: http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/16009.html |
