Hit about 85 here but on the way home I was in a lot of traffic and the fans came on. At the light right before that I noticed some pinging as I pulled out under load. Then the fans came on at the next light and it wasn't as bad, but still there. If I accelerated slow enough it wouldn't ping. Is this the nature of the 07 emissions compliant beast ?

Yep! Can go with higher Oct. Gas, at least 92. Oil change lately? They do that for the most part though when they heat up.

If you paid for premium, it is time to change gas stations.

One by me started playing that game. I turned them into the county auditor, in ohio they are responsible for weights and measures kinda things.

Although many people have reported "pinging" under high load and temperature conditions, your engine should not "ping". There are many opinions out there. Do a search and you'll have a full night of reading. You'll find talk of octane, and static timing. If I had "pinging", I would be working on get it to stop. Just my .02 cents

Im reporting info given to me by Harley himself...okay, just the Harley service center. If there is something that we should know about the pings, drop a little more info Fran dog. I always figured it was normal to hear now and then on hot days when I got on it and so I was told by MANY'O people. I admittedly must say, I dont like the noise myself.

The average Joe calls 'detonation under a load condition'....'pinging'. I think I made the mistake of a 2 gallon fillup to check mileage (55!). If half a gallon of that was 87, that wouldn't help. I'll be running this tank out.

I was able to accelerate faster than most cars do from the lights with no problem. It only happened when I tried to have a little 3/4 throttle fun off the line...pretty much right before and after the fans came on.

Thanks guys, I'm good. Maybe a little octane boost for when it gets into the 90s...

If you notice the ping noise at low RPMs when it's hot outside and the engine is hot, like when you let out the clutch taking off without giving it a lot of gas, that's completely normal. The nature of the beast is that a high performance engine (10:1 compression) will tend to ping at low revs when hot. The simple fix is to get to higher revs before applying heavy throttle.

Yeah, but my 11.3:1 VRod doesn't ping....that engine has to be above 3500 no matter what and I know the water cooling is the major factor there. Guess it has spoiled me !

Seems with the lighter weight and similar power that I'm more tempted to shift at 2500 on the TT. Unfortunately, this happened off the line before getting the rpms up...not much choice when you start in 1st but to ease back on the throttle !
