Whats average LONGEVITY in miles that you could see from a VERY WELL taken care of XB9R??? Will they RUN high mileage??? without serious motor work?? Thanks as I am CONSIDERING one. Matt | ||

will outlast you if taken care of. Some on here are in the 40-50 thousand range with no issues. | ||

There is a mag story where they took apart a buell motor after a running it for 5k or more and the review was very positive. I don't remember where I saw it. Maybe it was a link on this site or the buell site. Bottom line is that these engines are strong. | ||

Very well taken care of? Not sure my 03 XB9 qualifies as very well taken care of, but it does have well over 60K so far. | ||

My '04 XB12R has about 42k miles on it, and her innards look brand new. The oil comes out clean at every change, and she doesn't leak anything. Doesn't even weep at the base gasket. Electrical gremlins are all I ever had, few and far between, and 99% were solved by tightening the battery cables. | ||

The current Thunderstorm/Sportster engine was developed in the early part of this decade. The design group put a strong emphasis on reliability; it was essentially a new engine with only the layout (45 degree V twin-pushrod-roller bearing lower end)being shared. Realistically speaking no parts are shared with the earlier Evolution/Thunderstorm platform. The point I am trying to make is the Thunderstorm engine in it's present incarnation is most likely the most reliable air cooled engine produced and with conservative riding practices and scheduled maintenance adhered to, there is a good possibility that 100,000 miles should be reached without a teardown. |
