My '04 firebolt would hunt around with it's idle. It couldn't really figure out exactly where it wanted to be.

The "Square Idle" is a tuning technique used with a software package (ECMSpy in my case) in which you add the values of four cells in which the bike idles and then devide the number by four, then set all four of those cells to that number. It seemed to make sense to me seems how the throttle isn't moving as the bike idles so the cells in which it idles really ought to deliver the same amount of fuel.

So anyhow... I made an ECMSpy cable and hooked up to the bike. I manipulated those four cells in the manner described above and viola... a mostly rock steady idle. It used to hunt around about 75RPM either way and now it stays between about 950 and 1000.

The four cells in question are the 800 and 1000RPM columns at the 15 and 20 throttle position rows.

Please don't give me any credit for this as I found it in the Big Bad and Dirty forum. As far as I know...

"Treadmarks" came up with it.

Since I have never read it in this forum I figured I'd post it just to let you all know : ).

The BB&D section has a decent bit of good ECMSpy info (as does UKBEG of course).

Did you check for an intake leak first? If you have an intake leak, you usually end up masking it by adding more fuel/averaging cells.

However, I myself prefer a slightly rich idle (Unlike the Gub'mint). I just make sure everything is "right", before I "fix" things.

After servicing multiple XB's, I've never had one hunt for an idle after I got done with it, no ECMSpy needed.
