Okay, so I replace my spark plugs with NGK Iridiums and she runs like a champ. I rode her two nights ago. Today, she won't start. Battery is charged, sounds like she wants to turn over, a backfire or two, and nada. WTF? I just got my license plate today and now this!!!! AAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!

Just an idea... check your plug wires. One of mine came out at the coil when I replaced my plugs. She started, but it wasn't pretty.

You didn't twist the throttle on start-up did you?

If so the front plug will be fouled and the rear may be. Pull them out, dry them off and try again.

Yeah, those plug wires and boots are way tight and can be tough to get on all the way.

NGK's do like to foul out in UJM's. I dunno. This is a strange one.

Well, today was a beautiful day. Sun was up, no wind. Tried to get her started and nothing. I must have taken out the plugs and cleaned them ten times. She started a few and then died. Out came the plugs and tried again. Nothing. Now the wind has come up (Big surprise for Wyoming). Still won't start. How many foulings will these things take before I need new plugs. How can you ride if the plugs foul SO much? I am really starting to get frustrated with this. Is owning a Buell like walking on eggshells? Oh, and I saw "I am Legend" today. Hollywood and creative license...

If you still have the old plugs, try them. Or a new set. Don't touch the throttle, just the starter button and let it run for a min or two after it starts.

And not to be a smarty pants, but what is the fuel level? Sounds like it wants to start and is running out of gas. DAMHIK

Good luck, and let us know how it goes. Dave

Don't forget to check the tightness of your battery cables.

a loose cable will allow the bike to start, but as soon as it starts the vibration causes an intermittent connection. The bike will stutter to a stop.

Once NGK's are fouled, they're done. The fuel soaks into the porcelain, and shorts the spark.

"plugs are cheap, don't you be" has worked well for me, anyways....

I had the same issue with the NGKs A friend rode it babied it and they were shot. I have since changed to Buell Pro series tripple platinum with a set of racing wires. You can get the plugs from the dealer. They run a lot better and will last all season without issue. I change them each season but they looked perfect when they came out. I bet by the way that you seperated the plug wire when changin it. The Iron Machine wires are far superior to stock and not too expensive. Good Luck

The saga continues...

So, this morning I decide to put the other set of NGKs in and ride to work. Pull the Iridiums out, gap the "stock" NGKs and realize that I need a different socket for these. Anyone know the size of socket I need on the stock replacement NGKs? I forgot to bring a plug to work so at lunch I could go get the right socket. Thanks.

Try this website out. It lets you decipher the NGK plug part number, including hex size.

Thank you, but I don't have the part numbers either. I suppose I could search, but I am WAY too busy at work...

Well, the search netted DCPR8E for the part number. I checked the sight and it says 16mm for this plug. I think I am going to go home, get the plug and take it to the store just to make sure. The weather is deteriorating, so I may not get to ride... Hell, I'll just put on five jackets instead of three.

Got home from work at midnight last night. Pulled out my new 18mm socket (Lady at NAPA didn't give me a spark plug socket I found out last night) and put the above plugs in my Ss and she started right up. Today is in the thirties and I was a little behind the power curve so I drove my truck (Which oddly enough is also a Lightning). Good thing too, started snowing on the way into work. Thank you to all for your assistance with my starting woes.
