Got my light upgrade work on my Firebolt finished and took it out for a quick ride last night. I can see signs 5-7 blocks down the road reflecting back at me (on low beam!)

I first re-lined the buckets with some aluminum oven door tape and polished that out pretty good (rode with regular lights in it for a bit, brighter)

Then converted the whole system to a HID kit I got off ebay for cheap. It's insanely bright! I'll have to get out and get a nighttime pic when the weather clears up

I have no before and afters, but let me say that this system tosses out more light than my truck does.

Here's a link to some pics. I'll explain them later if anyone wants.

I saw in another post that there should be enough room under the gauge cluster behind the headlight bracket - kind of an empty pocket, where you can hide that ballast. You shouldn't have to leave it hanging out there like that.

and please post another pic of that reflector at the end of the summer
so we can see how it holds up? Inquiring minds want to know.

Mid, if you can find enough room for the 2 ballasts under the faring you come over and show me. I'll buy a box of your favorite beer and you can drink it while I rewire them!
Fitting stuff in these bikes is TIGHT!!

Perhaps I could fit one under there, but I switched both high and low to the HID setup, go big or go home mom always said.

When I get this hid kit in the 6k temp.

I'll do my best to put the ballast/ignitor under the cowl seat with my kickstand puck isn't much room for anything else in there anyway

What did you do with the extra ballast and bulb? Also why did you not put the ballast box in the air cleaner cover box?

Hey Strmvt, did you buy those hid lights from that side
http://www.xtralights.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIE WPROD&ProdID=1335
They do have H7 for my xb12scg and they sure look like a good kit with digital balast! What do you think, should i take this kit or not?

I havn't yet but I will be soon as I get my taxes back. I like the kit personally b/c the ballast/ignitor are "all in one" and not seperate like "most" kits are. just seems to be better quality and I like the fact that it's waterproof just incase it won't fit where I want it to fit.

Will you write when you'll try the kit and tell us if it's worth that money. It's quite expensive!
And i'll probably buy two kits for both lamps. Did you maybe found if they also have bi-xenon (i didn't found it on their page)

p.s.: did you also take h7?

This one that you gave a link has 5000k color, when other have 4300K. How is with that colors? Most of sellers have 4300k, 6000k, 8000k, 10000k and 12000k. But some of them have 5000k. does this depend on what kind of the ballast is or just what kind of xenon bulb is?

O one more thing, did anybody tried to convert original lamps from h7 to h4? That how it would be possible to install bi-xenon kit which is made for h4...

Believer:

The color temperature is determined mostly by the gas mixture and, somewhat by the glass and it's tint. The ballast just generates the high voltage to create the plasma arc.

Converting to an H4 is just not as easy as changing bulbs. The reflector needs to be designed to reflect and focus the light properly. Single beam reflectors are much simpler in design than dual beam reflectors.

Believer When I do I'l do a write up for all the badwebbers. In N America the my Firebolt has H3 type bulbs for the headlights so I wouldn't get the H7 Also as far as color temp goes from my research 6k seems to be about the highest you'd want to go any higher in bulb temp and it's just tint which actually drops the light output of the bulb sure you get a pretty color but whats a pretty color if you can't see because of it I wouldn't go higher then 6k in my opinion. Midknyte I looked at that kit to and for the cost ya it's cheap and will do the job I'm sure my concern is where to put that huge ballast. Ft_bstrd hm.. air box be an ok place I guess but spending all the $$ to get an air box delete kit and then putting hid ballast in the air box kinda defeats the purpose but as there isn't much room on the bikes and depending on the kit we may not have a choice just my 2c which isn't worth 2c these days

Brandon, nice kit small to but with the one I'm looking at those 2 boxes are all in one with no room on the buells hard to put anything. I've always been told and have said there are many ways to get the same job done the hard part is choosing what way you want to get the job done

Strmvt...you have a good point...many ways to get it done...the only reason i went with the DDM was i got it at a great price...

to do it over again i would get the same one your looking at

the external box is why i had to mount mine in between the headlights

I have the xtralights 4300k on my uly, works great, caution, if you scroll down their web page it says that it comes with 4ft. wires, mine didn't. I was able to make it work but the install would have been simpler if I had been able to put the ballast under the seat.

I don't think you can cut or splice the wires so be sure you are getting what you need. I couldn't get their customer service to return my calls or answer my e-mails.

Also be aware while the igniter is in the ballast, there is another piece about 1in. in diameter and about 3in. long built into the wire between the ballast and the bulb.
They don't show it on the web site pics.

I won't go higher then 6000k. I'll probably take 4300k.

S-palmer: you said that you buy 4300k. What color is when you look in them. I know it should be white, but if it's just a little yellow i'll rather go on 5000k or 6000k. I want real white, or maybe a little blue-better then a little yellow.

Thanks

Believer, 4300k light is about as white as you can get 6000k light light starts getting a tint of blue and the higher temps are even darker tint of blue and that tint reduces the light output of the bulb so I'd stick with 6000k max for a ridable light just my 2c

If you needed a place to put the ballast and you have an R you could put it in the "trunk" couldn't you?

theoretically if the wiring harness is long enough sure when I get mine I "plan" to do just that.

Caution: In order to mount the ballast(s) in the trunk you would need real long HV (high voltage) leads. This is not the "wiring harness" but the thicker leads shown above. Most HV leads are between 18" and 24" long. I have seen one supplier advertise that 48" HV leads are available but you may have to special order. HV does not like to go long distances, that is why even 24" leads are atypical.

I got my H.I.D. from here:

http://www.kbcarstuff.com/Motorcycle_Xenon_HID_Con version_Kits_s/34.htm

It came with about 6ft of wire in between the ballast and the bulb. They have many bulbs available for most any application. I put my ballast next to my battery, there's a decent sized void on the Firebolt in between the battery and the trunk. The kit was a little pricey but the quality was very good.

Strmvt, I just got my kit last week, the light is very white, sorry I didn't take any install pics. I mounted the ballast in place of the horn on my uly and just turned the horn to the side, and zip tied the excess wire behind the headlight. They advertise these as plug and play, they are not hard to install but there is no plug on the power lead, nor is one included that fits the existing wire that went on the back of the old headlight. A few minutes with a soldering iron and using some of the parts they did furnish took care of the problem.
