I just changed my policy to motorcycleservices.com in NY. I was paying 1900 a year and the new policy has higher coverage, includes accessories, and the online quote was exactly the same as the personal quote! My 03 XB9SL is gonna be 826 a year and thats with 2 tickets, I'm 25 with a rider coourse and 6 years experience! Oh yeah, I'm in Cleveland, Ohio

22, one ticket, Dearborn Heights, MI. $1300 for the BLAST! You don't want to know what they quoted me for the Firebolt.

wow, sorry man, just goes to show that insurance is a game meant for us to lose! turned out to be cheaper for me. Can't hurt to check the online quote though for anyone else.

Insurance is just legalized age discrimination. I hate them worse than lawyers.

You make it back from LA yet?

Dairyland quoted me $2217.00 per year for the 12S . I’m not young I’m married I have advanced safety course have been riding (with a license) for over 25 years. Oh yeah that’s with a 6000-mile limit per year.

Hi, I'm a newbie to this forum. Currently a Bandit 1200 rider, but getting very close to purchasing a XB12s. Talked to my insurance today (USAA) and was quoted $382 per year for full coverage. I live near San Francisco, no tickets, 39 years old. I'm wondering why others are being quoted such high figures for insurance? I'm paying $270 per year for my Bandit.

Insurance costs vary by MANY things, first of all what state and city and zipcode you reside at. Each state has different m/c carriers.

My XB9S/HD FLHS policy is up next week and Progressive jumped the Buell part of it 72% to $775 but decreased the Hog 25% to $200. Dairyland, according to HOG/Brag, will cost me $450 for the Buell and $500 for the Harley. State of WA. GMAC will do the package for $980. Geico will do both cycles for $650.

Shop around...compare...decide.

As an insurance agent, I can frankly tell you all that while age, driving record, and supporting lines of business can have a significant impact on motorcycle premiums, the biggest single factor determing how high one's premium is . . . ??? . . . is one's credit report. Geico was the first company to use credit ratings as a factor in premium. If you have a poor credit rating, you will pay full premium prices. If you have a good credit rating, you will get up to a 60% discount.

Insurance studies determined that (generally) people with poor credit are much more likely to file a claim against their insurer than those with good credit ratings. This is true on fire and auto insurance as well.

Also, companies who do not wish to insure a particular type of motorcycle will charge a rediculous premium.

So, Phil,
Just what is the credit rating point scale breakdown for the insurance company you work with/for?
Is it anything like:
700+ = 10% discount
650-700 = flat rate
600-650 = 5% price hike
550-600 = 10% price hike
500-550 = 20% price hike
400-500 = 50% price hike
less than 400 = take a hike

Just curious if you'll answer more than anything since most insurance companies don't like to reveal how they assess customer risk valuations.

Thank you for any feedback that you do provide.

Re: Credit Ratings and Insurance

-=snort=-

Obviously my company doesn't do this. I have a spotless credit rating, (I have checked it multiple times) and they charge me up the wazoo. I repeat, insurance is nothing more than legalized age discrimination.

If I ask them, they always tell me the only thing I can do to lower my insurace is..."turn 25".

What fucking BULLSHIT.

MikeJ . . . My experience is with Farmers Insurance group. They recently bought a company (Foremost) who does all of their motorcycle insuring. Farmers starts with a flat rate premium (zero discount) then adds discounts for multiple lines of business, zero tickets/accidents last three years, then they add any discount for good credit ratings. The agent does not see any results except a "letter" grade after inputing name, address, driver license #, The computer runs an instant credit check and simply reports back with a letter of the alphabet. A, B gets up to a 60% discount off the flat rate. Poorer scores (ie. P,Q,R) get's nothing or perhaps 5% off flat (full) rate. Hope this helps. If you have bad credit, you won't find many good deals on insurance. Just the way it is throughout the industry.

My credit report isnt the greatest...dont owe anyone crap, but have had some issues in the distant past that are still held against me from time to time. But it sure as hell hasnt affected my insurance rates. 40 yrs old no tickets on record & my Harley costs me $180 a yr full coverage & the buell is $240 a yr full coverage.

All I got to say is find out WHICH cr agency your ins company uses.

After going thru some big legal issues a few years back. I learned a big lesson about credit reports. Get hard copies from the big three and compare them! Then go about making them match each other. For me about a third of my history matched up between them. It took nearly three months but I got all three close to each other. Now I keep tabs on them at least once a year, just to stay on top of it.

Read all three of them and you will get a picture of what really goes on. If in doubt about anything on it, ask questions, then dispute it if that applies. File the dispute thru the CR agency and let the appropriate time go by. You will get a fresh copy of your report with changes and/or explanations of the disputed items.

btw: One of the best credit risks out there...
Someone just thru the bankruptcy ringer.

A good insurance story..... with Progressive.

I was recently forced to get liability ins for my dirt bike (long story.KDX-200), and this would be the third bike on the policy. It seems this 3rd bike qualifies me for the multi-bike discount. This discount resulted in a lower premium for 3 bikes than 2 bikes.....

That's right,.. I got my KDX added to the policy and a refund check for $16....

too cool........

My bill finally came from Progressive. It was $1800 for the next 12 mths vs. $1100 for the last 12. I called the agent to complain... tell him I was switching, and he was actually pretty helpful.

First, he explained that Progressive has reclassified the bike which drove-up the premium.

Second, he switched me to Dairyland... $750 per year for same coverages!

Amazing... $1800 vs. $750.
