Anyone try to put hard bags on a Firebolt yet? I see folks doing it on the Lightnings all the time... I'm thinking of using the Givi E21 model - not too big, not too small, but have no idea how I would mount them. If Buell won't build a sport-tourer for me, I'll do it myself! | ||

I'm trying to mount a set of the Givi 35 on a 25r. Just in the dreaming stage. If they work on a 25r, they would work on a 'Bolt. Probably will need to modify an existing mount, unless someone can convince Givi there is a market for Buell stuff. IIRC the 'Bolt tail section and 25r tail section are the same. I'm thinking I'd have to get a set of mounts from basically any other bike and cut off everything aside from where the bag actually mounts. Then I would get the "l-brackets" from the Ventura rack system that already works for firebolt models. These are the parts that bolt to the undertail and would provide a rail on either side for mounting. Then it would just be a matter of welding some bracketry to connect the Givi mounts to the Ventura rails. I'm guessing that the Ventura rails use some pretty sturdy mounting points since they have some fairly substantial bags that attach to the things, but I'm not sure. I'm guessing that they use the mounting points for the passanger pegs, then the holes that are about halfway up on the subframe, and then something else at the end of the tail, just not sure what. | ||

Mark: Good thinking. I didn't realize they had "pannier" brackets for the 'Bolt. At $135, that is not too steep of a starting point. The Givi V35 cases are pretty nice. http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/2 807/69/ I sent an inquiry to Twisted Throttle about getting some brackets for the 'Bolts or 25r. We will see. Neil, The Ventura L-Brackets aren't fot panniers, they're for a tail bag that hangs off the back of the bike. Basically, there would be more downward force beacuse of the distance from the mounting point than if hard bags were attached closer to the mounting point. Those V35 cases are nice and about the best looking ones out there, but make sure you get the PLX-specific mounts for them. At that point, I think we could just buy the cheapest mount for our bag choice, irregardless of the bike they're designed for because all we'd be keeping is the portion that attaches to the bag itself, which should be the same on all of them. Everything between the Ventra brackets and the Givi mounts would be custom-made. | ||

Brian - I wonder how similar the mounting positions are between the Firebolt and Lightning tails. I would guess that the passanger peg mounts are the same, but it looks like you part that bolt to the cheese grater as well. I would consider going with the H&B Junior bags if it were a no-nonsense fit, but they are a bit ugly and much more expensive than the Givi E21's. | ||

Brian: The mount you show is for the H&B set up for every Buell but the Firebolt or 25r. The tail section on the Firebolt and 25r is different. We were thinking about using the Givi V35 bags versus the H&B bags. They are not quite as big but, they seem to nest inboard a little closer than the H&B's:  Thx Neil S. | ||

Did some looking at the tail on my firebolt and I think coming up with a mounting system should be really straight forward for the most part, but I won't know for sure until I have everything in my hands. I'm also thinking of getting one of the smaller top cases and bolting it to a passanger seat pan - quick release, interchangable, etc. As an aside, in my current luggage (buell saddlebags, tail bag and 10 liter tank bag), I was able to fit 2 days worth of clothes, rain gear, a fleece jacket, 2 bottles of water, 2 pairs of gloves, my camera and toiletries with room to spare in the tank bag and nothing at all in the tail bag. Space isn't my issue - waterproof and convienent storage is. | ||

Mark: Which bags are you thinking about, V35 or the E21? I like the V35 since it will take two times the weight and almost three times the volume. Also the V35 opens completely versus the E21 which only the top opens. I've been there before with both styles and the V35 clam shell is a lot easier to load and unload.  Thx Neil S. | ||

I'm talking about the E21s. Those V35s are nice, but cost a TON compared to the E21s. Space and weight isn't an issue for me - I can already carry everything I need. I can see the pros and cons for both types of lids - I think overall though I'd like the top-opening style of the E21's just because with you open it up everything doesn't come tumbling out. Plus, I think those V35s would just look too overcoming on a firebolt, which has a much smaller presence than an 1125R. | ||

Sounds like a plan. I'll be looking at the V35s, they do cost more but, whenever you need something, Murphy says it will be at the bottom of the E21s, been there done that don't want to do it again. Just for reference. E21=16.5x7.5x13.5 V35=20.7x12.4x15.5 Time2Work Neil S. | ||

When I looked up the company link to learn more it was all in german. I cant read german and thats why I made a post. From what I could read though, it looks like it should fit my 03 and that I can put them on myself. Im not overly mechanically inclined but I think I could handle this task……lol! | ||

Yeah, you can get the same bags in 30 liter size without the silver trim for about $420. A little better, but you're still looking at something like $700 for the whole getup. The smaller 21 liter bags I'm looking at go for $160-ish, the rack I need to mutilate and make fit goes for $115. Plus I'm thinking about moutning a small trunk bag on top of a junk passanger seat, which goes for $85-ish. Basically, with shipping, I'll be paying around $400 for everything, but I'll have to monkey with the mounting for it all. | ||

I have the Buell nylon bags now. How many liters are those? Do you know? I looked but it didnt say. I can fit a pair of socks in them..... I want something bigger that locks. On mine, the zippers are breaking, they are ripped from a mishap I had on the Blue Ridge Pkwy, they are small and they dont lock. I think that even if I end up spending $800.00 that it will be money well spent. | ||

I have the buell bags as well, plus the tank bag and a tail bag. I can fit everything I would need for a long trip in them with room to spare (i pack light), so space isn't my issue, which is why I'm going with the smaller 21 liter bags. I have no idea how big the Buell bags age, but I would guess close to 15 liters maybe. | ||

Im not a heavy packer either but I like knowing that I have "extra" space in the event I pick something up on my travels. I take long trips and weekend trips quite often and between my rain gear and cable lock and stuff, it doesnt leave much room. I have the trunk bag as well. I like it. Even if I get the hard luggage I may still rig the nylon trunk bag to the back somehow. The number # thing I like about the hard bags is that they lock. I can leave my jacket in it and not worry that its on five finger discount. | ||

Well, I went ahead and ordered the Givi E21 side cases and E30 top case, as well some mount racks for a BMW F650 that I'll cut up and make fit. Hey Neil I am thinking of buying a tig welder to make my own brackets for the 1125R for the Givi v35's, have you or anyone else had any success in getting them on your bike, I want a tig welder so I can make a really strong bracket, I am thinking of next month buying them and then I could tack them up and take them to be welded, a good tig welder is expensive so if I knew I could do this and make my money back I would be all set, I would like to do an exhaust system to and some other things. Mike: I have not pulled the trigger yet on the V35's. I was thinking about doing it this week. I have my First Gear bags sold. I was going to look at the brackets they have available and guess at what could be the one that could be the least modified and work. Since the mounting loop is necessary for the bag interface, I thought that at least that would be required. Let me know your thoughts. I'll probably have a set in my garage by next weekend. Neil | ||

I had the guy who photo shopped the 1125R with the bags lower it and rotate it clockwise so I could get a better idea of how it looks and look really good, I found out that I can use the soft saddlebag over the bags I got now, I go shopping and can not believe all the food I can carry, I like the bags I got but are two small, I had to take the padding out of my sons jacket to get it in the saddlebag and they are not water proof, I was a welder metal fabricator and know I can come up with a mounting system for them and really thinking of buying a tig welder, I would make the mounting bracket out of stainless steel, the problem is money and having it hooked up and really have to think about this, which is hard for me to do. I am having a talk with my son about buying used bikes that need work and to buy them and resell to make some pocket money, I know I could make an exhaust for the bike as well as more things, I have a mig welder but it is a really cheap one and does not work that good, I would like to have hard bags on my bike that look like they fit the bike and those Givi V35 are the closest to matching the bike. check out this website http://stilyagi.org/~kbecker/givi.html I do not know if what this guy is doing is for the V35's, they have to be bent in on the bottom and that makes the whole process harder. Hi Neil I am thinking of using the rear passenger set up to bolt the bags frame to, I also made a steel piece to cover the hole that was left when I removed the license plate bracket it is on the inside so I could bolt to that and the foot peg mounts, I really need to see the bags to figure something out, I got some other projects going on right now so this will be on the back burner for a few weeks, I will be staring at the pictures to see if I can figure something out before buying them and will let you know if I come up with any idea'r.
