WTF! I can't get the cam cover off! I removed the rocker boxes and the pushrods, but I can't get the f'in cover to come loose. It says in the manual to tap on it with a plastic hammer, if I tap any harder I'm gonna reform the aluminum! Help!!! Schmitty | ||

Really....hmmm are you sure you disconnected the oil vent line on the side facing towards the sprocket? I just went through this procedure on my XB12 last week and had to tap very gently on the lip between the cases to separate at the gasket, but then the cam cover came right off. In fact you have to be real careful the cams don't pull out with the cover. | ||

I did it over a year ago. I seem to remember doing a little gentle prying, thinking that "I should not be doing this." There are a few shafts in the cover and you have to break the tension of the oil between the shafts and the cover. Lots of wiggling while pulling. | ||

You did drill the rivets and remove the timing cup, right? Try tapping *up* on the cover; the cams push down during use and I've always had luck giving a sharp tap upwards. | ||

On this subject. Will you have to redo the timing setup if you remove the cam cover? | ||

I did not touch the timing. Don't remember the manual recommending it. | ||

You have to remove the timing cup and the cam sensor, so yes the timing may be affected. It says to scribe a couple marks to help get the timing close when you put it back together, but I plan on having it rechecked after the bike is all back together anyway. |
