My problem is, I try to ride my FLHP like it's one of my tubers.
Ask anyone who's seen me run it through a battletrax course. That poor bike....although it loses weight with every run, LOL. |

This isn't a Buell thing for me it's a general observation. I started riding on the street in 1990 with an 89 Honda Hawk (damn I wish I never sold that bike). Back then EVERYONE on 2 wheels would wave at you BECAUSE you were on 2 wheels. Hell's Angels, Diablos, Sportbikers and Long Haulers on Touring bikes.
Fast forward to 2007 when I bought my Firebolt and I'd be surprised if 30% of motorcyclists wave. Almost all sportbike riders wave but damn near nobody else. I guess it could be the bad rap sportbikers have for doing wheelies and stoppies at every light in South Florida that makes regular motorcyclists not wave. Just annoys me as I wave at everyone if your on 2 wheels. Well everyone but morons with no helmets. If you ride without a lid you don't deserve my wave. LOL |

There is what, like 3 parts in the engine that are same as a Sporty.
Not exactly true - cylinders are the same (aside from the color on some models), heads are the same, and the rotating assembly is the same save for the pistons, transmissions are the same, yadda yadda.
But, to be fair, the new Sportster engine is more Buell than a Buell is Sportster. So maybe we should be making fun of those 2004 and newer Sportster riders for trying to be like us. |

If you haven't rebuilt a Buell engine, you have no idea how Harley it is.
Sure, parts have been updated, but the lifters are giant and heavy, the rockers are giant and heavy, the locking plate on the drive gear is giant and heavy. It has a friggin primary chain, the crank nut has no locking mechanism so you have to crank it down to 240 ft/lbs, there is an additional gasket surface in the rockerbox setup that finally seals with this generation gasket, it has a siamesed crank that limits RPM, it has rollerbearing lower rod bearings that limit RPM...I'm getting tired.
This engine is a state-of-the-art 1950's Harley design with a number of fantastic improvements by Buell. No engineer in their right mind would have designed this way it in the last 25 years.
It does work pretty well, but is VERY HEAVY and low revving. Not a clean sheet design by Buell. It is Harley engineering all the way, fixed as well as probably is possible by Buell.
On the positive side it has suitable power and a character that is very addicting. It think the work anony used was endearing. I love my bike. |

wow i enjoyed reading this, For I too ride with mostly harley riders. Most of my family owns harleys and i get bashed on a lot but it all comes down to if you ride then thats fine with them no matter what you ride. Although i have ran into a few "bikers" that just despise you, one time at a H-d dealership they had a customer appreciation day and we stopped some A** wedged a chewed piece of gum right under neath my head light. just goes to show not everyone has accepted buell. |

Wow Hero, that is a sad story.
Just ignorant HD guys that don't know much about motorcycles.
The irony is that WWII vets started riding HD because they were the strongest and fastest bikes they could get. Now it's de-volved into a fashion show and lifestyle instead of a passion for motorcycles. Reminds me of high school cliques. Very immature and kind of pathetic.
Now most young vets ride....SPORTBIKES! Same idea as the guys in the 1950's on their chopped/bobbed Harleys.
I really enjoy meeting Harley riders that know about motorcycles, engines, other brands, etc. Seems to be the minority, but they are out there. |

I don't really understand the whole mentality of making fun of people because of the brand of bike they ride. I am also into photography and photographers seem to do the same thing with camera and lenses. The Nikon/Canon rivalry is at least as spirited as any motorcycle brand bashing I have ever seen. I guess everyone just feels the need to convince themselves and everyone else they made the best choice possible with their purchase.
I admit I bought my Harley five years ago partially because of the "mystique" otherwise known as marketing that HD has. I also chose a HD because I happened to like the way it looked, I liked the way it sounded, I liked the way it held its resale value better than the Japanese bikes, I liked the aftermarket support for it, I could go on, but that is enough. I hadn't owned a bike for 20 years and my last one had been a Honda that didn't excite me much at all. My Harley excited me. Now, after riding it for five years I want something other than a cruiser to ride. Something sportier. Lots of choices. Maybe a Ducati. Maybe a Honda. Maybe a BMW. Maybe a Yamaha. Maybe an Aprilia. Maybe a Triumph. Maybe a Suzuki. Maybe a Kawasaki. Maybe a Buell. Maybe even something else. Man I love choices. Thank goodness we don't all make the same ones. Now where is that lottery ticket? |

I started just a few years before that. It was before motorcycles were really socially acceptable, so we were a relatively small group of misfits.
I gotta admit though, I steered clear of the Hells Angels and Outlaws. This college boy got in plenty of altercations, but I laid low and tried to be invisible around those fine gentlemen. |

1990? Heh... that doesn't seem so long ago to me. Have things changed that much?
I started riding in 1976, when Harley guys weren't like the ones you see now. They were a totally different breed back then, cut from a different social strata. Except for an occasional old dude on an FLH, most of the Harley hard core back in the mid-70's are what most of the bloated bandana heads aspire to be today. Believe me... they are doing a poor, poor job of it.
I don't think very many of them would lasted too long back then. They would have been run down like a pack of wolves on a rabbit. |

trust me if I would have caught him He there would have been stompin. I think i had the bike 2 months when this happened. Not happy |

I love Harley's, but I just can't justify spending $15,000 on a bike, then have to turn around and put $2,500 in pipes and screaming eagles stage kits. Then 10 other people have the same bike as you, so you have to get another 1,500 in a new paint scheme. (I have a dozen Harley friends who, not 1, have a stock Harley)Then of course who have to buy a $300 or more jacket plus, lets say another $500 in other accessories. If I was going to put that much money into something, I would and am in the process of, finishing my basement in my House. So, why do some of the Harleys guys think they are better because they made a different choice on what to put their money on. |
