I wave to everybody as long as my clutch hand isn't busy. Some return it, some don't. Sometimes , a guy has gone past before I can get my hand un-busy. Riding again after twenty years I've noticed there are a lot more bikes on the road, but, a lot less wavers. A lot of the mid-life crisis, "Look at all of my new black leather,Beanie helmet, and Viagara prescription" Japanese cruiser guys don't wave, but I think it is either because they don't know, or are they afraid to take their hand off of the grip on their brand new HUGE displacement(first) bike that is scaring the crap out of them because they've only had their license for a month and only ride Sunday afternoons ! Wow, was that a run on sentence or what?

Up here in the Kalamazoo area none of the Harley guys wave. There're all the 30-ish set with the "cool guy" colored lense glasses, chili bowl helmets, cut-off sleeve shirts, and goat-tees. Non-wavers, every one of them. The metric cruiser guys are 99% wavers and genuinely nice folk. The sportbike guys are hit or miss. They will either ignore you completely or are first-wavers (as in they initiate the wave in the exchange). I wave to them all, but in order to get a 100% return on my waves, I'm going to have to implement the shocker.

The move looks like this:

1. Extend the open palm, like int the cowboys and indians movies: "How kimosabi"

2. Curl your ring finger to the "closed" position.

3. Congrats, you are shocker certified.

O.K. This whole waive thing to me is slightly irritating. I have a few Harley's, and I also ride an XB12R. In Colorado where I live and ride, If I were to waive at every "biker" I would have to stay in one gear. If you want to waive, that's cool, but I might just be concentrating on what's ahead, what's behind, my line, an apex, or some other motorcycle riding related tidbit. So, if I don't waive, don't take it personally. "Live to Waive" Waive to Live."

This may be a bit controversial, but I now just "flash" my high beams most of the time.

So far the local response has been mostly positive with me usually getting a friendly wave back.

Best of all, it does not interfere as much with my riding.

In the "old" days one flash meant "hi", quick flashes meant a warning, - like cops, road work ahead, sand, etc.

I am out to ride, not wave, but at the same time I do not want be rude, and Buell did give us that little button to pull.

Works for me, ...... comments?

I use that little button to flash at cars that look like they might pull out in front of me. It keeps me from doing the one finger wave.
Around here, tapping on your helmet is the sign for police ahead.
