It is nothing to do with 'trendy' in the case of the D&D muffler (although it appears to be true for the Jardine). If you read the threads on the D&D muffler you would have seen that the extra length was necessary in order to get the maximum power from the system.  Personally I think the D&D 'attempt', as you put it, is 1000% better looking than the stock pipe. This in addition to giving more power AND saving over 12 lbs in weight over the stock 'dog bone' muffler. | ||

The Jardine looks like it wouldn't last for long. I wonder if anyone has one and would like to comment on how badly it shakes. WRT to D&D, it looks fine, and sounds good too. It kind of reminds me of the Force exhaust for the XBs. Function before beauty. | ||

Yes the extra length may have been necessary for creating optimum output... but there is a difference between something that is just simply "made" to work, and something that has been designed to work... I was just hoping that more effort would have been put into that pipes design. Do not get me wrong that pipe would have looked great on my 78 cx500, but not the 1125R. Again this is my opinion and because of that carries no real substance. But hey, if they developed something that will be popular and sells well, more power to them. Just because one sore bugger does not approve of it does not mean anything. | ||

I was just hoping that more effort would have been put into that pipes design. I wonder what you're saying there. It's not like you can re-invent the wheel. The reverse megaphone is one of the best exhaust designs. Length is a factor in exhaust design. If it were short I'd be willing to bet the torque curve wouldn't be near as nice as the dyno shows. My guess is the lower end would suffer with a shorter muffler. The new engine doesn't have the same pulses as the XB does, therefore a different design. I'd also be willing to bet, if you just hollowed out the stock exhaust, the power curve would suffer as well. There is a wealth of information on exhaust/muffler design in the KV. Very interesting reading, it'll also show you why some exhaust systems are the way they are, and why some simply just make noise. | ||

I guess this what I was trying to say... Buell designed a fantastic muffler for the 1125R albeit not the prettiest... but they did manage to get it fairly compact. I believe there are ways to "emulate" length, through the clever use of chambers,passages and "absorption materials"... I was just expecting something a bit more from a company that JUST manufactures exhausts. I think the trickiest bit about making a muffler for the 1125R is making it "manufacturable"... Since most of the smaller companies that supply mufflers for the Buell cannot afford stamping dies. | ||

but they did manage to get it fairly compact At 19lbs it is hardly compact and bijou is it?. I think we will see some very interesting and exciting European designs in the very near future (I have been proivileged to have seen some already!) that will give much better power delivery and be much lighter than anything we have seen so far, including the D&D, without being too loud either. Watch this space........... | ||

Matt, It certainly is not light, but it sure it much shorter then the D&D. Not to mention the weight can be reduced by the use of different materials... Bijou, maybe not, but more like Geode... Not that spectacular on the outside but a masterpiece on the inside. I am looking forward to see the European designs, as well as what Kevin comes up with. I am sure that both will be spectacular. | ||

Hey Matt, did y'all get your 1125 yet? Nobody here in the UK/Europe even has a delivery date yet, but rumour has it that we may see some bikes in April! |
