I'm trying to order 2 new oil filters for my XB9SX. I have ran 2 EAO10 filters on my bike. The Amsoil dealer looked up my bike and he's telling me I need a EAO09 oil filter. Can anyone tell me if he is correct?

Eric, I've had several SDF10s on my bikes & I know that they fit. The first time I tried to get a filter from my local Amsoil rep he got the wrong one & said that that's what Amsoil recommended. It wasn't even close to fitting up.

I've not seen a EA00x filter ever. Is it a new series?

Steve, actually when I switched to Amsoil, I couldn't find a filter number, so I contacted Kevin Drum and he told me I needed an EAO10.

My Amsoil guy said no ea filters were listed so I run a Wix now that is recommended for buell, don't know what number. I would like to run the ea filter though. I'll try a 10 next time around. Does is not matter the 10 is a car fitment or am I wrong?

And yes the new ea filters last 25 thousand miles instead of the 12,500 like the old ones as long as not extreme driving conditions.

Eric, I'll have to ask Kevin about it. Since I change my oil & filter every 2000 miles, I doubt if an extended mileage filter would matter.

No offense, but 25K on the same filter sounds like BAD insurance! I'm with Jerseyguy, 2-3 oil changes per season (2-4K miles) and at the end of each season for winter storage. Cheap insurance - if I spend 30 bucks every couple thousand miles on material for an oil change, that's $ well spent.
I just have a hard time buying into some of Amsoil's (and other additive manufacturers) claims. So, I don't!

I put Amsoil in my F-150 and 1125R and I too would have a really hard time running the same oil 35,000 miles and a filter for 25,000 miles.

Bottom line is that Amsoil is not any more expensive in general than other synthetic oils, so why not use it...

For the 1125r I use 20W-50 motorcycle oil, Amsoil specifies the OEM oil change interval so that one is a no brainer.

For my truck, I use the XL Amsoil that specifies a 7,500/6 month oil change interval--that is palatable to me. It will be nice changing the oil twice a year. Also, I ride more than drive so I should probably be close to the OEM recommendation of 5,000 miles by the time 6 months rolls around....

BTW, for this interested you can become a "preferred customer" for $10 per 6 months or $20 per year and get wholesale prices.

This may be of interest to some of you. It's a comprehensive comparison of Amsoil versus leading moto synthetics incl. SYN3.

The EAO line of filters is relatively new. They use full synthetic media that is 98.7% efficient at 15 microns and 50% efficient at 7 microns.

Anyhow if you get the wix number that Amsoil recommends that filter crosses to the EA009 filter above.

The wix number is 51056

I contacted Amsoil directly and they said they do not recommend a EA filter for buells at this time and that the wix is the only official recommendation, so it's a use at your own risk.

I'm going to try to see if I can get more info backing this up, since I now have a vested interest in running an Amsoil filter in my XB12X.

If I learn anything or sway Amsoil enough to release a filter for buells you all will be the first to know.

Msparks, which filter do you recommend? I need to get a hold of that dealer and order 2. SDF10 or the wix filter 51056?

Well your not going to find an SDF10 since they don't make them anymore.

Since I just got my Buell, I haven't done enough research to see if the new EAO filters are okay.

I would use the wix for now, you should be able to get those at any NAPA.

Hot off the press,

Hope this works for you guys. I'm hoping this means we can get a "motorcycle specific" filter for the Buell. This brings me one step closer to putting in an Ad Campaign for Badweb.

Michael

Thanks for your input.

As you know AMSOIL is always investigating new product opportunities. Due to marketing reasons, AMSOIL tries to separate automotive and power sports applications. The EaO09 would work.

To the best of your knowledge and experience, would customers desire a black or chrome version of this filter?

Thanks!

Kind regards,

PS I replied back and said that 75-90% of Buell riders would use a black Amsoil filter. Hope this was correct?

Eric,
I was just at the local car parts store and I looked through the Amsoil cross reference chart for some of the filters I listed above. Interestingly enough some cross referenced the EA009 and some the EA010. I went to the shelf and opened up the boxes for both and compared them. they look the same except the 009 is about an inch shorter than the 010. The 010 looked about the size of all the other filters I have used and the 009 looked a lot smaller. The price was the same so I got the 010. I'm guessing either would work but that the 010 has a larger surface area and would probably flow more through the element before the bypass opened. But I'm just guessing.....

Hey Msparks, want to chime in on what you think? At this point I'm not sure what to do.

You will want to look at the PSID which is the pressure differential on each of those filters. They may be different. If they are the same, then I guess either on will work. When I get a chance I'll try to do some digging on them.

The eao09 is closer to the same size as stock i dont know if the eao10 will cause clearance issues, the only difference is the height and obviously it will hold more oil.

I just held the 010 up to my bike and it is identical in size to the WIX that is on there now which was identical to Amsoil sdf10 that was on before. No clearance issues whatever. The 009 appears to my eye to be much shorter than stock.

the reason i would have clearance issues is because on my 12R the chin fairing brackets go under the filter.

Good point as I am not using the fairing with my Drummer CF. I've just designed and had water jet cut a batch of Drummer spoiler brackets for the chin fairing. Kevin has the blanks and has to form a set up for me to test. I'll be sure to check the clearance to the filter.
