So I think I'm about to pick up an 03 XB9S this week, and I'm scouting out mods... My hands get cold really fast, so I'm thinking about putting the hand guards from the CityX on the bike. Do they actually deflect a notable amount of wind? And would they work with the "eBay special" bar end mirrors?

Also, are there bar end weights that work with B/E mirrors and the handguards?

They help keep the main brunt of cold air off the hands. Depending on how you have them adjustded, either the top of the hand or the finger tips can still be a bit exposed.
I have mine tiled down enough to protect the tips and use Tourmaster Winter Elite gloves to protect the top of the hand when it's below 40 degrees.

I also highly recommend heated grips.
I have a set of Polly heaters that work very well. They are small metal heaters that go inside the bars and the wires are run though the bars and out two holes (that you have to drill) at the bottom of the bars so it's a very clean look. They also allow you to use the grips of your choice and they have two settings, hot and ouch. I believe they can still be had for about 36 bucks.

you sure can use hand guards with bar end mirrors.

when you order your hand guards, make sure you order the hardware too.

I have the CRG Lane Split mirrors and Al @ American Sport Bikes CityX handguard adapters. I love them and they work great.

MetalStorm, How are you adjusting the hand guards? I would like mine to block a little bit more toward my fingertips. I have the heated grips but the tips of my fingers are always the first to get cold

Punkid8888, I used to have the same problem with my fingertips. Solution: Don't grip the bars so tightly! When you do that, you cut off the flow of blood into your fingertips.

When you feel them getting cold, relax your grip and wiggle your fingers to get the blood flowing again. For some reason we (human beings) tense up in the cold. I guess that is a deliberate survival mechanism to restrict blood flow to the extremities to protect the body core.

A good electric vest will keep your core warm. You'll probably still find yourself instinctively tensing up in the cold, but now you'll understand why and consciously just relax.

How are you adjusting the hand guards?

I rotated the clutch and brake lever down a bit. The guards move with.

This did two things for me.
It protected the finger tips a little better and gave my hands and wrists a better position for squeezing the levers.

I just added some Tourtech hand guard extenders as well so the top of the hand is a tad better now as well.

If I can find my camera I'll take a quick pic.

Badlions, do those adapters work with any bar end mirrors that attach in a similar fashion? I would imagine so, but just want to be sure...

Bcool the adapters are just a longer screw and 4 washers and a spacer but for 5 bucks I would get them from American Sport Bike . But if you go with another brand you could make your own

Bcool, they should. all it does is replace the hardware and add spacers and washers for the bar end mirrors. thespive has crg's, and i know they work on the ebay specials that look like crg's as well.

Sweet guys, thanks. What about throwing bar end weights into the equation though? Probably not possible?

HVMP makes bar end weights that work with the Buell hand guards.
They stick out about 2" -2 & 1/2" and are pretty hefty.

I used to use them and they worked very well but they hindered my lane splitting ability and I wanted Polly heaters so I removed them and went back to having blurry mirrors.

Took some time to get the right amount cut out so the mirror could sit low enough. I had to cut more than I thought I would. Worth it though, and the mirror works great at any price, especially $11.00!!!
