I just bought a XB9S. The previous owner replaced the battery with a new 200cca unit right before I bought it. I have the invoice.
Today after taking it for a spin it would not crank. After getting it home and cranking it several more times I think i have found the problem.
The bike has the dual light mod (both lights on high) and I was riding with the highs on. if I have the low beam on the bike seems to crank just. However if I have the highs on it cranks weakly and if I leave the key on with the highs for about a 30+seconds then it will not crank at all.


Question: Should both lights on be able to drain the battery that quickly? Should I step up to a stronger battery? What do you guys think? Anyone every had a similar problem?

Depends on exactly what battery he put in. A fellow at work bought a chinese ebay battery for his bike. that battery never held a charge. He replaced it with one from the dealer and that fixed it.

Any idea what the voltage is now? I would charge it, check the voltage. then start the bike and check the voltage again. The voltage needs to be higher when the bike is running. Check and make sure the battery terminals are tight.

An answer to your group of questions. There is plenty of power to run both lights and a bunch of extra stuff with out dipping into the battery charge. I run a heated vest and gps with no issues, another fellow I know runs a heated vest, arm chaps and gloves with no problems. Look at the Uly board those guys add a bunch of extra lights and don't seem to have any problems. The stock battery is 200cca, so no need as long as the new battery is a quality battery.

Make... sure... the... battery... cables... are...

TIGHT.

Cable ends FLAT up against the posts, and cranked down TIGHT.

I can't stress this enough. Dielectric grease on the contacts never hurt either.

Battery has Power Sonic "Super Sport" on the side. The invoice, from Battery Source, says PTX14-BS.
Next chance I get I'll take it into AutoZone or the Mobile Bay HD and get the voltage checked. The terminal connections look and feel good but I'll clean and reconnect those too.

Not a real big fan of power sonic because of some experiences with them where I work.

The test needs to be in your bike. If you do not own one you need to get yourself an inexpensive voltmeter. They are easy to use and indispensable for trouble shooting. Ashame your not a little closer I would show you how to use it.
