Court or Anony,

I'm trying to find out if the new XT ships with the luggage brackets mounted from the factory or if they have to be installed by the dealer during prep. Understandably, my dealer said they wouldn't know until the first one actually arrived.

Any insight you might have would be greatly appreciated and I would dance at your next wedding.

Stupid question, may i ask why you want to know? Either way they will be on the bike when you pick it up. : )

There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers.
That's Not not directed at you Froggy, it's just something I read (I think here on Badweb) that I found to be very profound.

I suppose if the brackets are installed at the factory and inspected before shipping there is no chance of a dealer rushing the job and stripping threads or other such mishaps.
After seeing the reports of difficulty installing the right side bracket (alignment issues) I think this question has merit.

Damn you Towjam, now I'm curious to know the answer : D

You're spot on Metal. My reasoning is that if they are not installed at the factory, I may install them myself as opposed to having the dealer do it. That way I can ensure they're done right and not some rush job. For example, I would be surprised if the dealer actually LocTite'ed the bolts.

From everything I've read on some of the other luggage-related threads, I think I have enough info to do the install and ensure it's done correctly (especially with the pics and detailed info that Froggy posted). On the other hand, my preference would be to have the brackets already mounted by the factory.

It's always good to know what to expect in advance.

Chance favors the prepared mind : )

Update: The XT's luggage mounts are mounted at the factory - just 2 steps prior to the crating process.

A big THANK YOU to Court for tracking this down.

And with this question answered, I now need something else to fixate about... I'm wondering if the luggage is keyed to the ignition key

Nope. It's keyed to the LUGGAGE key.

Yeah, I kinda' figured but I was hoping that the luggage locks could be keyed to a common (ignition) key. I guess I have gotten spoiled from my BMW ownership. (On the other hand, BMW only includes 1 "real" ignition key and an "emergency" plastic key. If you want a 2nd metal ignition key, be prepared to spent between $70 and $100. Seriously.)

Good god. Does BMW install a GPS tracker and keyless entry transmitter in that $70 key? The key (with keyless and panic) to our Magnum R/T is cheaper than that!

No, but they do supply a tube of KY.

No - but it does have an embedded RFID chip which means that you can only get replacements from BMW - and you have to present proof of ownership before a dealer will order it. Then IF YOU'RE LUCKY, you won't get the dreaded EWS! error which disables the ignition because the chip in your key (or the antennae around the ignition ring) has gone tits up. If that happens, you are screwed and will be calling for a trailer. There's no way to enter a reset code or manually disable the ignition lock out. Also, there is a limit the number of replacement keys you can purchase.

To me, this seems like technology just plain getting in the way. Nothing like having your 1200GS out in the middle of East Jeezus and not being able to start the bike (check out the advrider forums for some horror stories). Buell did it right with the 1125 - you just need to enter the code to start the bike - or you can disable the ignition lock-out altogether.

(And for gawd's sake, don't get me started on the totally brain-dead security system on the new Kawa Concourse.)

Not anymore. They cut out the KY when they cut the toolkit down to nothing more than a screwdriver and a wrench for the oil filler cap.

Thanks for the update.

As much as I like BMW motorcycles, they often make me thankful that I have a Buell instead. : )
