Can someone point me to where I might find instructions on how to use it. Does the bike need to be on? Be running? How do you set up the COM ports? When do I get a transmission time out or the NEK error code?

Basically I need a Quick Start Guide, a run down of what to on a first time connecting to the bike to check for any error codes. I want to eventually be able to do a TPS reset this weekend. Maybe I am just retarded because everyone is talking about how they have used it, but I can't find the "hows".

I am a Mac guy, and this experience is reminding me why I hate PCs and don't want to go back. : )

Thanks,

I'm going to use it soon too. I have v.1.7.8 is that the latest release? Do you have: buelltuningguidev1.3? I have it and can e-mail if necessary. Try:

Got to make sure you got the right ini file update. There isnt one out there yet for an 05 race ecm, but for many other ecms models there are.

Wait a week and version 2 is supposed to be out should be much better. Be careful with what you adjust, you could do some serious damage.

I don't want to adjust anything, I just want to upload the '07 reflash and do a TPS reset, that is all I need it for. I am just having problems with knowing where all the files go. I am not a Windows user so a lot does not make sense. For instance when I use the Save As to download the '07 EPROM file, it save it as an .xml, etc. Argh.

Okay, the full version of the tuning guide is much better than what is on the ECMSpy site, thanks.

So how long does it take to Query the bike? I am trying to save my map, but it says transmission timed out, so when I try to disconnect the ECM, it says please wait for the Query to be completed, but nothing seems like it is happening.

This is with the ignition on, bike not running. I am not sure if I am actually talking with the bike or not. Probably not.

Make sure you first selected the right year bike/ECM when ECM SPY launches. Second makes sure you have a good com port. Third select the first tab called overview, then click on the top left icon with the keys. If you have the right com selected you should see your current TPS setting, AFV, etc. show up.

Also make sure that you have installed the drivers for your TTL-232R cable.

If you are not able to get any values to populate the first tab labeled overview then its not communicating. And you will need to try another com port.

When I first hooked up I had to try several different com ports shown in the drop down menu. Even though all that I selected showed a open com port only one actually worked with the cable.

also each time you switch tabs you may have to re-select the key Icon to activate the new menu

Okay, I checked my properties and my cable shows up in COM2. So I select COM2 and I am still getting "Transmission Timed Out" messages. So I did as you suggested and went through COM3 and COM4 to no avail. So at this point i am guessing it is either my cable is wacky, or I don't have the correct driver.

So... lets try the driver. Where do I get them and where does it go?

Also where do I get the most recent ini file and where does that go? I hope to have this figured out one of these days, and I appreciate all the help.

You can get he drivers here
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

Also which cable did you end up getting? You need the TTL-232R or the TTL-232R-WE.

Also check out this forum. It has a ton of ECM support links.

I am using a Daytona Twin Tec cable that is USB. I used it with tuning software on my 2004 Sportster, and it fits, but doesn't seem to work, so I ordered the TTL-232R-WE and a new connector just in case. I am hoping my problem is the drivers. What file do they go in to after the are downloaded?

Thank you!

Just download and unzip in a folder you can remember easily.

When you connect eh new TTL-232R USB cable windows should prompt that it has found new hardware. In the new hardware found window select that you will select drivers instead of the automatic option. then just browse to the location of the unzipped drivers.

You don't want windows to automatically install because it may install the wrong ones.

I believe there were two sets of drivers prompted for when I set mine up.

Good luck

Aron

Thanks Aron, it appears it is a cable issue. And the one I have (while it is Deutsche/USB) is in fact NOT ftdi. So I found the TTL-232R-WE online and in stock, so I ordered it and hope to have it this week. That should solve my problems.

I hope. : )

Sounds like your on the right track. Once you get ECM Spy up and running I think you will find how easy this program is to use. Its much easier for TPS resets and AFR resets then VDSTS.

The other cool thing is that it will tell you what the new AFR is after the learn period of the ECM is over. This way you can tell how close your ECM is setup for your bike and if further tuning is required to keep the ECM from having to constantly try to correct itself and causing either rich or lean spots in open loop.

PS
Also make sure what ever you do. Save your original Eprom to your laptop after you fetch it from the ECM. In case there are any issues with the 07 flash you plan on doing you want to make sure you have the original as a backup.

Yeah, I'll make sure it is saved. I also have a Race ECM, so I think I am going to try and see the differences between the '07 flash and the Race and see if the Race is the best for the bike, or if there is a compromise somewhere in between.
