PLEASE help. Which exhaust/muffler system for the Firebolt? I am interested in your thoughts and recommendations in regard to quality, durability, horsepower and noise/sound. I am just so confused reading all the forums and wanted some input for such an important decision.

What are your goals and what other things do you plan to do to/with the bike in conjunction with the muffler change? Do you want to flatten or widen the torque band? Do you want to peak out the horsepower more? Do you want more noise, deeper noise, a raspy or a throaty sound, or less sound? Some people in apartments with underground parking actually want a quieter exhaust to keep neighborly complaints down.

Whatcha looking for? What else have you done or will you do with the bike?

While we're on the subject, I'm in the same situation, exhaust shopping. Sound is important to me however I don't want an obnoxiously loud pipe. Second would be a little more power. I am really stuck between the Wileyco w\ stock module & filter, or spend the extra $$$ and get the racing kit....... I just don't want to be disappointed with the sound of the Race exhaust. I've said it before and I will again, I am quite happy with the race kit. Reasonable price, excellent sound improvement without being obnoxious, and a noticeable power gain. My only real beef with it was the terrible coating used on the original race kit mufflers, which has apparently been resolved (I ceramic coated mine).

I'm sure the available exhausts from the likes of Buell, AW/Nallin, D&D, etc. are well built pipes, but keep in mind there are some relatively inexpensive ways to modify the stock muffler, without affecting the performance very much, only the sound. Actually found the modded stock exhaust performed more similarly with just the race kit air filter & snorkle removed than with a homemade FMP style filter lid also w/ no snorkle. Didn't seem to like the ladder so much. With the modded ehaust & the Buell/K&N though... it's Sweeeeet! BTW- Stock ECM works just fine, thank you... Sounds good to me.

My number one concern is purchasing the best that is out there. I don't care how loud it is but I am concerned about getting something that is quality and durable. It would be wonderful if it also gave the most horsepower had a great loud "Harley" sound. I hope that helps you answer my questions MikeJ

Hard to go wrong with Wileyco - great sound and looks with a lifetime guarantee. Making up a different rear mount wouldn't be a bad idea, though, along with replacing the sidestand bolts with studs.
Chin spoiler mounting brackets nearly offset the weight savings of the cannister!

I heard some people talking about modifying the stock exhaust in another thread, but nobody seems to explain what you have to do. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but I have no idea what the inside of an exhaust looks like, let alone where I would start cutting ....... thanks

Hootowl, Skully (Keith) has the D&D and apparently likes it very much.

CJ, the Latus is a sweet looking pipe, chromed dual exhaust outlets, and apparently is quite loud. I know XB9 has one, you might want to ask for his ideas on it.

I just took a 1/2 drill bit and drilled 3 holes in front of the "inner" outlet. when you look inside the brushed "shinny" outlet, you'll see another outlet inside of that, just drill some holes there. sounds much better.. or you can cut it open and do basically the same thing but probably even louder.
mine will be for sale when my force kit gets here..

My bike sounds great with a modified stock exhaust. I had a Latus on the bike and it was too loud for me. The modified stock exhaust is about half as loud as the Latus. The bike runs just like it did before the mod, but sounds way better. All it took was a little of my time, a cut off tool, a welder, and some paint.

Gotta love them cheap thrills, eh Cap'n? With the modded stock exhaust & K&N my bike now easily revs all the way out to the limiter in 5th gear. Anybody care to share the calculation for my actual top speed. Optimistic speedo says 120ish.

Ckj,

Do you want HP/torque for street riding or racing? Different pipes are designed to produce HP/torque at different RPM ranges.

If you want power for street riding, you probably want an exhaust system that makes most of its power in the midrange so you don't have to run it to the redline on every shift. If you plan to race, then maximizing HP is probably what you want.

I wanted to maximize power for street riding. Take a look at "From Cruiser to Sport Bike - An XB9S Rider's Log by Keith Thrash..." in the "Tale Section". You can find what modifications I've made to my intake/exhaust systems. I've got my dynamometer results from each modification along with comparisons to other pipes I was interested in.

On an XB9 model 7,500 rpm in 5th gear works out to approx. 133 mph.
