How does the fueling compensate for the extra air? The DDFI doesn't have any air pressure sensors.

Eric, that front picture looks awesome. The only thing that would make it look better is a matching turbo on the other side to make things nice and balanced!

The fuel system is modified with an external manifold pressure referenced fuel pressure regulator and larger injectors. The turbocharger is sized so well that boost pressure almost directly corresponds to almost all of the available TP/RPM based fuel cells. The only few spots where the turbo is a bit behind is below around 2200 rpm. As long as the map provides proper fueling under the maximum possible airflow, if there is any less airflow it will run rich for just those few instances. The mixture hits a 10:1 AFR at the richest of times, and thats under full throttle around 2000 rpm.

I may incorporate a RRFPR or FMU into a future design to see how it would work in fueling the turbo setup. I have just found a very promising RRFPR from http://www.synapseengineering.com/. The problem with most FMU's is their size. They run in addition to a standard FPR and there is not that much extra space on the XB. The Syncronic FPR is a fully adjustable FPR for base pressure, rate of gain, and they are working on one for returnless EFI systems, like the XB's use. Right now I am running a Turbosmart FPR and have plumbed in a fuel return line.

I have thought about trying a twin turbo setup on a XB. I think that one turbo on each side would be a stunning sight.

The question for the TT setup I wanna know is one turbo for each cylinder? A 'Y' collector to one turbo and the second one in series? Or from the cylinders to the 'X' pipe and then split after the 'X' to each turbo?

I would drive each turbo individually from each cylinder and the intake would come together after each turbo into the throttle body.

How do you go for intake temperatures?

Does the oil pump have the capacity to lubricate both turbos with the extra horsepower?

Great project, but I think one turbo is more than enough for a good street driven bike on a stock motor.

Nice project -- love the turbo sound going with the Vtwin sound! I would be interested in one for my 12R (soon to be 12Rs when the cg tail goes on).

2 thoughts:

I like the higher up position for one reason, but it's a biggy -- looks like that in that position my frame pucks would do a good job of protecting the turbo in a drop and maybe even a slide. Thats a "good thing" in my book!

Have you ever thought of mounting a second air scoop (the ones that look like stock but fit the off-side) and then routing the air for the intake through the one on the turbo side? I was thinking you could have the filter mounted inside the scoop and a pipe dropping from it to the turbo (or something). Just thinking about keeping rain off the filter (hey, I'm in Washington, it's an issue).

Anyways, kick ass looking turbo -- and very professional looking as well. Love to see one behind the counter at a dealership!

I, as well, think that twin turbos would be a bit overkill for the street but it would be fun to have!!

The left side position of the turbo makes it stick out a bit further than the frame pucks will protect. That is one reason I am moving it to front and low.

I will have to be sure to position things properly to allow for cornering clearance. That will be my biggest obstacle. I am going to try to incorporate the filter into the left portion of a new chin spoiler. The filter will not be as exposed to the elements and could add to the aesthetics of the machine.

As with every modification there are trade offs. I love riding my XB everyday and I want to have the turbo setup be as natural as possible. I want to maintain the stock feel of the bike while making it as unique as I can!! I learn from every little change I make and I know that I can always go back to the way it was!! I am not scared to try something new. There have been plenty of changes I have made and regretted immediately after.

I work actually on a XB12SS turbo project,
I have all the components , and the work is in progress, I would like to know if i can reach you by email because I have a lot of questions about oil pressure , gas pump etc..

ericz...i was wondering what kind of turbo you put on the bike....and what kind of intercooler and what else is 100% needed to complete the conversion...do you think i can take a small turbo off of something and make it work myself...i mean im sure i can but i just want some details if possible
