I just noticed today that my XB12Scg is missing the fuel vent tube. I saw a pic of another persons bike and saw a tube that mine didn't have. Is this tube necessary? My bike smells of fuel when driving it around. Where does the other end of this tube go, does it just dump out to the ground? Thanks! | ||

It might go to the evaporation canister, it might go to the ground. Mine used to go to the evap can, now it comes out behind the left footpeg. Since I got rid of the can, it had to go somewhere. You're smelling gas I think because fumes come out of where that hose attaches. Get some rubber tubing and route it down and away from the engine. | ||

Since the tube is missing, and this bike has the evap canister, could this cause a vacuum leak? I noticed yesterday that my bike had a high idle after letting off the gas. | ||

It won't cause a vacuum leak. But you want to vent it to the area away from the engine. The standard routing for this hose is behind the left footpeg, there is a clamp there for the hose. The high idle after letting off the gas is probably caused from too high of an idle setting. Mine did the same thing. When the engine is hot adjust the idle just over the 1000 rpm mark. It cured the problem for me. | ||

Actually it IS a vacuum problem!!! Cali bikes pull a vacuum on that cannister to suck the gas fumes out and if you don't plug the cannister or the line to the cannister from the intake or replace the line to the tank you've got a bad leak. The 49 state guys haven't had to deal with these things. Also if you choose to replace the line to the tank don't overfill the fuel as the raw gas flows into the cannister and then to the intake and the bike coughs, spits and even might die. You'll also get the dreaded flashing red engine light. No damage, just restart and ride it'll clear in a minute or so. Don't ask how I know!  | ||

Well I checked it out and my bike actually doesn't have the cannister. I believe that it once did because this bike is CA legal, but I see no evidence of it once being there besides the missing vent tube. | ||

Then I would route a hose from the vent to down behind the foot pegs like the 49 state bikes but check to make sure that the vacuum port at the intake for the tube to the cannister is blocked off. | ||

If it were removed, You wouldn't see any evidence of it ever being there. It's just a big ugly black cannister mounted on the engine isolator bar on the left (primary) side of the bike. Here's a pic  (Message edited by metalstorm on December 17, 2007) | ||

For some reason I thought the cannister was under the seat? | ||

It's hidden under the seat on the Firebolts. There just isn't enough room to hide it on the Lightnings. | ||

Yep.  Whenever I have the front wheel off I stick something between the grip and lever just so no one can come by and squeeze the lever. That would be bad. That would make more work for me. The ashtray was readily available.  It may very well be a redneck way to go about it but it works On Edit: I must admit that the thought of keeping it on had crossed my mind. Hey Metalstorm, remember when you told me I'd hate looking at my new bike all winter long and not being able to ride? You were right! I'm ready to shove on a trailer and head to Texas just to get out on it! 12" of snow and a Buell won't mix to good I'm thinking! At least I can look at it and dream...only three more months! Don't overfill your tank and hand your helmet on the left footpeg. Helmets are good at catching excess fuel when you don't them it to. | ||

What Unibear12r said about overfilling a cali bike is true. So so true. Don't ask me HOW I KNOW Birdy, My rear wheel is missing?!? Well that explains why I've been getting nowhere fast! If you go as far as Texas you might as well go a little farther to Nor Cali. Good roads here. A little rain at the moment but nothing to keep a good bike garaged. | ||
