EZ, I think they hit all the points that needed some attention, and then some.

The new '08 oiling system is huge.
I had two gearcase related failures on two different '03 engines (after 20k+ hard hard miles ea. including alot of extended WOT track time). Wiped out a camshaft on one and spun the cam bushings in the other. Not everyone had these types of problems, I think only under severe extended high rpm service & heat would these issues show up.

They took care of the other problem area a few years ago, '06 I think when they did the major re-design on the transmission.
Damn countershaft retaining screws... I won't go into that poor '50's design.

And the loosening compensator nut problem is redesigned this year also - I can't think of any other stones left unturned.. should be very very very solid now.

Ezblast: as a prof engine builder the only time I have seen a non-stepped guide drop is when the interference fit between the guide and the head is not correct (eg: too loose) or there is a defect in the head casting (possibly a crack or a soft casting). Extreme overheating of an aluminum head could also be a culprit. Having said this though - I still prefer a stepped or "shouldered" guide any day over a non-stepped guide and I really don't know why manufacturers continue to use the latter - probably a cost cutting alternative for sure!

I'm way off topic here, but came across this the other day and since you guys are discussing valve guides this might be of interest to you:

It's an in-depth look at the design of Chevrolet's new LS3 Corvette engine with lots of details about what went into the head design.

It seems to me Buell has a long way to go to match the quality of my other two rides

Maybe time to sell your Buell, how many miles on it?
