Ok, that's just sick.

I really don't want to read this entire thread. I have read a few pages and it has really slipped away from the original point.

So, can someone just tell me, is the RSS beneficial, harmful, or neutral to the bike?

In general terms it can create problems under certain conditions. Yes it can help reduce the fan run under a certain set of conditions, but it has created negative side effects under certain test circumstances.

Try one out. If you have problems, take it off. If you don't, welcome to the pro-RSS camp.

The scoop doesn't reduce rider heat, but it does tend to make the fan run less. I don't mind the fan, and if it doesn't reduce rider heat, I don't need one.

Plus, they are expensive.

Now, if it was empirically proven that the RSS helped to extend the life of Bank Angle Sensors, I might consider. : D

I think it comes down to you are not going to get answer that is backed up with data, there are a couple of riders that have put them on and said they noticed a difference. And after all the hubub, I am mounting one! And a crash cage to boot. If for no other reasoning that I like the look, it is my bike, and my money. Now, I have to go get some therapy for that Hasselhoff and puppy pic, it is wrong on so many levels

My kind of folks.

Fats, You should be beaten for that photo, I just recently got it out of my head from the last fool that posted it!!

I dont support the RSS for the simple fact that I cannot measure the head temps in 20 different locations to see if I am getting uneven cooling.

Personally the bike works just fine stock and I dont have an engineering degree to argue against the experts.

Those of you arguing against the experts have yet to give me any "REAL PROOF" this improves the engine conditions needed for a GOOD RUNNING MACHINE.

YOUR SEAT OF THE PANTS DYNO APPROACH WILL NEVER CHANGE AN EDUCATED MIND.

Something to think about: The fan runs off the temperature sensor. Cool the temperature sensor and the fan runs less. Does that mean you got good/even cooling?

Not necessarily.

something to think about: hasselhoff is kept warm by the puppy on his crotch. If you remove the puppy from his crotch do you have a cooler hasselhoff?

Not necessarily.

Steve,

He IS a moderator, or as we prefer to say, a custodian. I've tried. He promised. He may be incorrigible. We may need to send him away for a month of psychological detox. You got room at your place?

Obviously not as he doesn’t have a Right Side Scoop.

welcome to the debate bubo. ;) The last time Hasselhoff was "cool" might have been the first season of Knight Rider... 1981? anything after that is merely papparazi propoganda and media masturb@ation hype. the only thing worse than puppies on Hasseloffs naked body, is being the poor schmuck that has to remove them after the photo shoot. And did anyone else notice that he is flipping us all off? Thats right, he is waving the bird "Ha I am getting paid for this, I am German, you stupid teens will eat this up".... Going to go ride.

The Hoff is a unifying force. We can fight like cats and dogs on the RSS issue.

I introduce The Hoff only to provide a central figure we can ALL hate.

Strange how something so horrific can provide an improvement to the overall thread discourse.

There is method to my madness.

I used to experience vapor lock on a regular basis. 1953 Mercury flathead. I think it was a '53. Oh well, it was a long time ago in a land far away called high school. Sometimes it even vapor locked while on a date. How convenient was that? Very.

You brought back memories, my first car was a 53 Mercury.
It was a southern car (no heater) but I didn't care.

As you can see adding a RSS would cause a "air void" over the fuel rail. IE air would be pushing together from both sides not allowing air to properly flow over said fuel rail.

(yaaaawn) What a booooring read.

I still did not see where it said that the RSS didn't work in south florida, where the laws of thermal dynamics cease to exist.

Gotta go...I think my fan came on.

Edited to clarify.

This is all from memory (so none of it may even be remotely correct), but I remember an issue Corvettes had in the early 70's in production racing. They were overheating at speed when the front grills were opened to let more air flow in. The the extra volume was apparently backing up in the fan shroud and not letting enough through.

Check out the front grill on those Corvettes some time. Two separated openings funneling air into a central radiator with a shrouded fan behind it. The key to solving it was to remove the fan and shroud... but if you couldn't do that, I would imagine the answer would have been to close off one grill opening.

This proves nothing, of course... but I thought it was related to the topic.

Boring???? A lot of brainwaves were burnt during the creative cycle that created this design. Usually, the simpler it seems in the patent, the stronger the patent. At least that's what I have been told by the high$ lawyers at corporate.

Reading the patent gives some insight to what Abe was saying in Fuell (if you took the time to get that far) .
