This Thursday a buddy and myself are going to be changing from a stock xb12s exhaust to a D&D. I have the service manual and plan on using that. But I was hoping some of you could give me some tips and pointers to save us some time and frustration. It's an xb12s.

I also plan on getting a race ecm & TPS reset when I take it to the dealer for the next service.

Thanks in advance

You do not need to remove the rear wheel to get at the rear muffler strap's. remove just the front pulley sprocket cover. Get a long extension and a swivel and go through the belt tensioner pulley to get at the strap's. Disconnect the cable from the stock muffler. Then loosen the collar bolt where the muffler and header meet. it should drop then. Of coarse you''l need to remove the lower body work as well. As far as the cable tie it up so you won't see it. That way if for some reason you ever go back to stock the cable is there to hook everything up again. Easy job...should take a hour or so.

With the D&D, you will not need the front crescent shaped aluminum muffler mount. Just one allen bolt holds the crescent to the engine case.

There is a tab on the D&D that lines up with the engine case hole.

After you're done with the install, you're going to need a re-map on your ecm. The D&D is probably the most difficult aftermarket to dial in. This isn't as simple as a TPS reset. Contact Al from American.

Beach, the race ecm was made for the Buell race pipe only. D&D needs a re-map. Although the need isn't as great for a 12 as the 9, it should still be done.

"The fueling mismatch is large on the D&D, matching neither the stock map
nor the race map particularly well, largely due to the fact that it is making biggest power over the same range that the Buell and race pipes are making the least relative power. Tuning the D&D took longer than all of the other pipes."

From American's test of the various pipes.

I agree with this - as far as power is concerned, the D&D is basically the inverse of the race pipe, so the Race ECM won't be a very good match.

That said, a buddy of mine put a D&D on his 2004 XB12S and rant eh stock ECM for a long time with no drivability issues. He did eventually get it retuned and it really woke it up, though.

Removal instructions are posted on kdfab.com. I am interested if you are selling the stock muffler

It will run fine with the race ECM. You will either need to drill your air box out or get a 2006 air box lid. As the D&D will run rich. The muffler will do very well in the mid range but fall's short on the top and alittle on the bottom.

The bike should be fine with the race ECM and a hi-flo air filter kit that is de-snorkled.

Sparrowman- Sorry at this time I am planning on keeping the stock muffler. Just by the slim chance I'm not happy with the new one.

Bads1- I have a K&N in already, been running in it all summer. I was planning on just drilling holes if needed.

Everyone else- Thanks for all the info. I'll let everyone know how it went once it's done.

My XB9 with a D&D and race ECM didn't very well at all until I installed the DirectLink map from American Sport Bike.

The change went well, took about an hour and a half. Keep in mind we took our time and it was the first one for us. Haven't done the ecm yet. But I'll have to say that it sounds good and rides good now. It is a little lagging in the low end. Almost like it's gasping for air. Didn't drill any holes in the air box yet. Will wait til the ecm is in them do more.

Thanks everyone for the input. It made it a nice swap.

I do have one other question...We did ride it a bit after we swapped it. In that entire ride the check engine light never came on. We did leave the servo motor in place. It's cold here in NY so the ride was no more then 5 minutes. Did the light not come on because of the temp and the servo didn't open or because the bike still thinks the servo is there?

As long as you leave the servo motor in place the check engine light should not come on. If you want to remove the servo motor you will have to buy the servo emulator to trick the computer into thinking the servo is still hooked up.

I also have the D&D with a K&N filter on my 07 XB12Ss. I got the stock ecm remapped by American sportbike (alittle bit more expensive than the race ecm) but it runs great and I then brought it over to H-D dealer and had it dyno tuned.

If you put the race ECM on the bike you can remove the servo motor. The light will not come on.
