Since I use a heat-controler, I wired mine directly to the battery. I have the female "hot" lead coming out behind the seat where it meets the airbox cover. When not in use I just fold back the seat, slightly, and stuff it behind the flap.

Pretty straight forward. The Gerbing lead has an in-line fuse so you are protected in that regards. You still need to resist standing around with your heated gear hooked up without the engine running.

I use the grab handle on my tankbag as a perch for the heat-controler.
